The award for poor choice of words for December goes to The Gruniad.....

"Sachs tried to persuade Cleese to stop short of physical violence during rehearsals and the scenes. But he still ended up being frequently hit, often with spoons. He also suffered acid burns from chemicals used to produced smoke in a memorable scene when Manuel’s white waiter’s jacket caught fire in the Fawlty Towers kitchen.

Speaking of his on-screen chemistry with Sachs, Cleese said....."

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen Fawlty Towers and those clips just made me laugh out loud once again.   Genius.

To be fair, he was 86.

26 older than me!! So even if I survive to that age, it's only 26 more years!! God that's depressing.
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

In those clips it comes across as he being the comic spirit rather than Cleese. I don't know how true that is really overall but looks more that way.

My thoughts are similar. 86 after several years of dementia is not tragic; it's when one's time has come.
Great chap who will be missed.

IMO though this is sad, it's not a 'curse of 2016'.

Natch the Daily Heil had to get in on the act:

That's the same newspaper that ran a fromt-page story complaining about the number of Jewish refugees, including the Sachs family, coming to BRITAIN post-Anschluß, though, so any cries of "hypocrites!" will be roundly ignored.

I think he was, like Ronnie Barker and Gene Wilder, to name but two, a relatively quiet and refined person who just happened to be a wonderful comedy actor.

It always amazed me, the difference between Ronnie Barker and Norman Stanley Fletcher. Likewise, Manuel and Sachs. (Wilder was famously shy and unfunny in real life).
