Title: Camera-Phone Photos
Post by: LEE on 03 November, 2008, 10:58:07 am
POST YOUR CAMERA PHONE PHOTOS HERE

Thought I'd start a thread to try and demonstrate how good or how bad Camera Phones can be.  I think they have now reached the point where perfectly acceptable 6x4 prints and 640x480 'Web Blog' photos can be produced.

Maybe it could help someone select a phone should they be looking for a decent camera function.  After all, a camera phone can take a better photo of a situation than a DSLR you have left at home.

Sony Ericsson K800i (3Mpixel).  Nice bright day
(http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u249/freddered/Audax/WestBayBike.jpg?t=1225708117)

It also has a Xenon Flash, rather than an LED, meaning it really does have a Flash, albeit with a limited range (LED 'Flashes'just don't work imo).

Any more examples of Camera-Phone photos?

Any advice ("great camera", "Crap camera") ?

I'll publish some more later today.

This (which I've posted before)

was taken with my Blackberry.

I find that phones seem to work well in good light, less so when it's gloomy

I have exactly the same phone. (As Lee)
I was quite suprised that I could get a reasonable image looking directly into the sun.

I think this is the most important aspect of a phone that can take half decent pics.  And remember to blow all that dust and gunk of the lens first...  :)

I'm now tempted to try and get some really nice photos just using the K800i now, as a technical challenge, to see exactly what sort of results can be achieved.

Watch this space and keep posting, I may award a "Best Camera-Phone Photo" award (no sneaky DSLR photos)

What kind of excuse is that..?   ;D    No I wasn't thinking of yours actually BwB.  The lens element on my phone, which must be all of 2-3mm in diameter, sits at the base of a little 'well' which is perfect for collecting dust etc...

I went out for a lunchtime spin with the intention of getting some photos on my Ericsson.

'Discovered' a church, down a muddy lane, that I must have cycled past 100 times and never seen.

I took a bit of care taking the photos (took light reading off the grass using spot-metering, held the phone as steady as I could and so on) and I'm pleased with some of the results.  My regular Canon would have done a better job with colour balance (and resolution) and had a higher success rate (much better metering system) but overall, not too bad, the main limiting factor is the fixed, wide angle lens that tends to give barrel-distortion at the extreme edges.

I learned that it's best to sacrifice the edges of the frame and crop the distortion out.
(Like any camera though, you need to learn how to use it for best results.  Since digital 'film' is free, there's no excuse for not blasting through lots of shots to find out how the camera (phone) works best.)

Fyfield Church, near Andover.  Very grey day, hard to find any contrast in anything.

Good detail.  I can read "Jane Olivia Vernon" on the grave stone.  Can't quite make out the dates - 1734(?)- though.

Another K800i shot from my lunchtime ride today.

K800i has a useful spot-metering option allowing camera to ignore the expanse of sky that would otherwise cause under-exposure of the fishing hut.  This has 'washed-out' the sky but there really isn't much missing, it was a very grey day and I tweaked the contrast lightly in order to get some punch into the image.

It's actually quite nice to have the challenge of such a limiting device with which to try and produce half-decent photos.

Zooming is done using my feet.

OK. bit of a 'push the phone to it's limits' time. Fireworks.

There was a particualr shot I had in mind. The local kids congregate on a climbing frame during the annual firework display so it was a question of line up, rest on the fence to keep it still, and shoot a few to get the shot I wanted. I would have been much better off with the dSLR had I been bothered to carry it around.

And one of the main points of the thread, a decent camera phone (or even a crappy one) is better than no camera.

I think the firework photos show just what can be done with a modern phone

Or, more realistically, where the limits lie. I wasn't expecting to get pictures that good. I only took a dozen then wandered over to join the family and friends for the rest of the display.

Then tonight I took my dSLR and the standard lens (17-70 Sigma 2.8-4.5 with macro) and took some pictures of my daughters aquasaurs. Off camera TTL flash. In total about 1k worth of kit. I wouldn't have got close with the camera for fast moving wrigglies (though the macro is good).

I recently got an SE W902, which is the Walkman version of the C902. The C902 is supposed to be a very good camera and the W902 has most of the same hardware - the differences are mainly in the software (the C902 has a few more camera-specific functions while the W902 has more Walkman-specific functions). Handily, it comes with an 8GB memory card, so there's no excuse for not taking loads of pics.

It's a 5MP camera and offers various options and presets but I'm not much of a photographer and usually just use it on fully automatic settings. Here are some snaps I took in the Lake District last week (it was very grey overhead when I took them):

The view down the valley from Castlerigg stone circle, just outside Keswick:

Nearing the top of "The Struggle", heading over Kirkstone Pass:

Taken from same spot as last pic but looking back down the hill:

Random scenery in Thirlmere:

Halfway up Hartside Pass (strictly Pennines rather than Lake District):

Same view, but the light suddenly changed:

It's about knowing WHEN to use a camera phone.  I think this thread has helped me understand what situations are best suited to using it.

My next mission is to try and get some decent portraits (hmmm, portraits with a wide-angle lens, should be interesting)

Yeah, my first computer was a C64 so I feel slightly bewildered by the capacity of phones these days. What's really incredible is the diminutive proportions of the memory card - it's an M2, which is barely fingernail sized.

A decent ‘cybershot’ type mobile phone is a camera, just a slimline one with communications functions.  It all depends on what your hassle/bulk:quality threshold is as to whether you use another style of camera, or not, when out and about.  While camera-mobile phones optically, may never reach the standards of good compacts which are similar in size; they are convenient.

Mine is a phone first and camera second though.

In fact, by use, it's an MP3 player first, phone second and a camera third.

When I was looking for a new phone I made sure it had decent MP3 and Camera functions as well but primarily I was buying a phone.

I would never buy a camera this poor* just because it had communications functions.

*Although it produces decent images for a phone, it is still only the equivalent of a £30 camera (due mainly to a lack of zoom and comparitively poor lens)

Having said all that, I just realised that I have a nice phone with a good MP3 player and an acceptable camera, 2Gb of storage, MS Outlook Synch, Internet Acces and an FM Radio for £100.  A device that would have been science-fiction not so long ago.

Fairynuff, I’d generally take a camera (compact - in first instance) and a phone, if I was going on a ‘ride’, as opposed to a commute – but then my phone’s camera facility is pretty hopeless anyway, so not much problem with this decision.  I have to say mobile phone cameras don’t inspire me much, but then I haven’t had the technological revelation yet... ;)  I’ll just have to take the chance that nothing vaguely interesting happens from the ‘aesthetic POV’ on my commute, or whenever else I decide not to take my camera – until I move up in the world of mobile phones... :)

I imagine that the lens will be the limiting factor again although "Smart Contrast" may be useful if it works well.  I had to do some post-production on the image above because my K800i finds it difficult to reproduce a wide range of contrast well.

In fact I have to admit that the photo above is a composite of 2 almost identical images (1 exposure for foreground and 1 exposure for sky)

It wouldn't even come close technically but that's not the point.  It's about how far camera-phones have come rather than how far cameras have come.

The Sony-Cyber-shot-S730 isn't an MP3 player, Alarm Clock, Radio, Internet Browser, Calendar, Notepad, Telephone, SatNav or Electric-Razor simulator.

Yes, I'm playing devils advocate really. :demon:  But phones do eat camera dust...  If one feels as though one may not want to miss out on a good image opportunity - take the mobile (with biking essentials such as MP3 player, alarm clock etc  ;) )  & also a decent slim compact digicam.  You won't notice the extra weight, but you will the extra IQ.

I love this thread.  I have been a most enthusiastic camera-phone user for the last 4 years and until I got a DSLR two weeks ago have never used anything else.

I am a happy snapper so have been more interested in the image rather than the technical aspects.  Even so, the picture quality has just got better as time has advanced.  Currently I have a Sony Ericsson K810i which is fab.

All the pictures I have posted on YACF have been taken with it.  But, when I get a minute I will post a selection of the best on this thread.

Will create some 640x480 pixel crops and post them tonight.

K800i resolution is 2048 x 1536 and my screen is 1280 x 1024 so a 100% image on my puny 15" screen would be 22" x 17" (if you see what I mean, i.e.the full image is 1.5x my screen dimensions approx) That's a good fit for an A2 print (16.5 × 23.4) but that's definitely pushing it unless the subject matter is very important to you.

A4 or 10x8 prints would be perfectly fine for most people though.

Taken with a Sony k850i. I tried to track the cyclist so the background was blurry- it took a few goes to get right and it's a ciomplete coincidence the best shot was a babelicious Dutch girl.

I like the second cos of the shapes the ducks make in the water. I had to be careful not to catch the working girls in the windows, they'd have snatched my camera and chucked it in the canal.

Lloyd Grosman is a punk rocker???  Has he always been into punk?  If so then he has gone up in my estimation.  Just goes to show you shouldn't judge people by their public persona.

And, there don't appear to be many people in the audience that look like punk rockers (though I know you do  )  How come?

It's always worth looking for this turning as you decend towards Thirlmere from Dunmail Raise, the Western side of Thirlmere is a nice quiet road and the Boulder half way down is a great viewpoint.

Without wanting to get too bogged down in pixel peeping, I think that a scaled down image with an additional 100% crop allows for reasonable comparisons to be made, although there will be a fair bit of 'user variation'...  BTW do you know what level of EXIF data the phone camera records..?

I suppose as you indicated earlier that for std print sizes or mild enlargements (perhaps not 'poster'), the better camera phones seem to be fine now (possibly with a tad more PP on occasions), and will probably only improve.  Though the improvements will probably mainly come from the sensor/electronic processing end - given the physical size constraints on having much larger/better light gathering lens elements (but you never know).

Can't see any EXIF data in Photoshop.

Re.  Lens limitations, I suppose you never know what they'll come up with in the future but I wish mine had a 'slide-over' 2x converter or similar.

I reckon the lens is equivalent to a 32mm (in 35mm terms).  It's not quite as wide as my 28mm but not far from it.

A 64mm 'telephoto' would be really handy for portraits.

I nearly went down that road just to see where it went but changed my mind. I'll have to investigate it next time I'm up there, especially if it's quiet - the main road was very busy with half term traffic.

Errrmmmm yes, back in the seventies he had a one hit wonder, he claims that punk has always been close to his heart. To be fair and I didn't hang around for long he can play guitar pretty well although the show tunes they played were pretty naff IMHO but I had to go for the novelty value. Do remember that not everyone into punk nowadays look like me, but that is what punk was and is about, just being yourself, at the time they were on stage there was more hardcore bands on the other stages. Here is some more generic punks ...

Call me a philistine but it looks like IKEA's warehouse.

Ha! Yes, that's about right. It's certainly the weakest of the turbine hall installations I've seen so far. There are several rows of these bright blue and yellow steel bed frames, many with books laid on them, all with an apocalyptic theme. There are also several large animal sculptures (including the Louise Bourgeois giant spider, and the red thing is supposed to be part of a giant flamingo) and a screen on the end wall showing bits of film, again with an apocalyptic theme. more (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7667051.stm)

Frankly, it's a bit heavy handed and unsubtle and not especially well executed. I found it quite dull.

Some of my colleagues went down on the day it opened and left copies of Nuts on some of the beds, which at least livened it up a bit. Unfortunately, they didn't last very long before security stepped in.

The 100% crop is showing the following in FxIF:
Camera Make:     Sony Ericsson
Camera Model:    K800i
Image Date:        2008:11:05 12:34:29
Flash Used:         No
Exposure Time:   0.017 s (1/60)
Aperture:            f/2.8
ISO equiv:          80
White Balance:   Auto
Metering Mode:  Spot

The K750i is the same
The W902 shows Focal Length (5.2mm) as well
FyPuNK's Nokia 6600 shows date/time only
GruB's Motorola shows "Rotate 90" only

Most others have have the EXIF data stripped out (probably by "save for web"), except for Chris S' Nokia 6300i bridge shot, which interestingly shows up as a Canon Powershot A530

2 examples (from AUK AGM dinner) to show the effect of flash on and off (Sony K800i)
The K800i has a 'proper' xenon flash rather than an LED light.  Up to about 6 feet it's pretty usable.  However, it seems to do a decent job with indoor ambient light (although it was very bright indoor lighting)

Sony Ericsson K800i.

Photo is cropped but otherwise untouched.  I had to take a few, using a different area for exposure, before I got something that wasn't washed out or too dark.  That's no different to most cameras in this situation though.

If it is a K800i then you can manually adjust the exposure with the arrow keys.

My problem was that I was holding phone at arms length over my head so I could shoot over the hedgerow.  I couldn't aim accurately enough to get a precise exposure so I just took a few until I got one I liked.

I really like the pictures you've taken with the K800i.
I am looking for a phone with camera, for taking snaps whilst I'm out.
K800i seems to fit the bill, but is no longer available.
Should I go for a second hand one? Or are the newer models significantly better? C902? any thoughts?

Blimey.  I never knew that.
I've only had the thing 2 or 3 years, perhaps its nearly time to read the instruction booklet.

Thanks David.

C902 is very good.  Been using one for about 8 months now and the camera is just fine.

edit: oops, mine's actually a C702.  Still good.

Thanks for the above, C902 has a 5MP camera which I'd like, out of interest do you use the GPS on your C702 much? and how useful do you find it? Might have to add the 702 to my list!

I spent ages looking at output and reviews here (http://www.gsmarena.com/)

In general Sony-Ericsson seem to do pretty well with the camera functions of some of their phones and I expect newer ones are better.

Whatever camera phone you buy though, you need to spend some time experimenting.  They all have limitations (tiny lens, tiny sensor) and you need to ensure you understand them.

Because they nearly all have a fixed wide-angle lens it's useful to have lots of pixels so you can crop small areas.

Best Bits of SE800 that I'd like on my next phone:

1 - Xenon flash.  It's a proper flash, small but better than (useless) LED "Flashes"

2  Best Pic - It takes 9 pictures in a couple of seconds (including a couple from before you pressed the shutter button).  Great for taking photos of action, when you don't know exactly when the event will happen.

3 - Some manual control over exposure, flash, focus, scenes and so on.

I'm waiting for a similar 10-12 Mp version to be available for £100

The view sitting in a chair in the reception of a hotel I was staying at this week. The whole place had more than a passing resemblance to Hogwarts (though the figures in the paintings only starting moving after I'd spent the evening in the bar).

Not much at all - a couple of times to find my way in unfamiliar towns, but it's slow and expensive.

Maybe it's time to revisit this.

The Nokia 808 samples (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_808_pureview_video_and_camera_samples-news-3905.php) seem to imply a quantum leap forward.

What is the quality like of current camera phones?

This thread is of no use with out pictures and tech details.

I am still using my trusty SE K800 so no point posting mine but I may borrow my wife's HTC for some samples.

Very interesting.

It also throws up the classic privacy issue of phones defaulting to tag your photographs with the location in which they were taken.

I've just had a look at a couple I've taken and turning off the geo-tag does do the trick.

I've no idea what this is. A square wooden frame filled with rubbery or plasticy sheets in various colours, resting on two logs and clamped to a tree trunk. It was in a belt of trees between the M4 and a large pond which seems to be now used as a fishing lake, somewhere to the west of Swindon. There was another, black and yellow, just beyond it.

This means that "Rimming" is a valid answer to the question: "So Barman, what have you been doing all day?"

Mind you I once saw some rather hurtful grafitti, "Alex Rims" on some poor bastard's (Alex presumably) wheels.

That is rather nice.
Thanks, I'll take that as high praise indeed.

We were out walking through Hampshire fields one evening when a thunderstorm rolled in.  30 minutes later were were getting truly soaked but this was at that magical time when you are stood in bright sun watching someone else, a few miles away, getting soaked.

It's possibly the first photo I've taken on a phone that I don't regret not having a "proper" camera with me.

That's 30% down to the improvement in Camera-Phones but 70% down to the ambient conditions matching the phone's capabilities nicely.

They still don't do a very good job with less than perfect lighting.  I think the trick is to understand your phone's capabilities and you can squeeze a decent photo out of them occasionally.

Of course any photo is sometimes better than none and I have some fairly awful images, but of some lovely memories, courtesy of my phone.

Here one from my initial crop of photos from my first smartphone (Huawei Ascend Y300)

5MP camera.  I needed to set WB cloudy, as auto was too undersaturated, and also took the exposure down to -1 (as DR not great as expected).  Sharpened a tad in Picasa.

Not too bad really, considering the fingerprint on lens I've just noticed.  ;)

HTC Desire S

I think the sweaty lens (phone stuffed in rear pocket) added to the effect rather than subtracted from it.

I'm finding that, with my "old" HTC and my Wife's new Samsung, if you take 5-10 photos at various settings/metering you tend to come away with a couple of decent photos, good enough for full screen display on a large monitor.  Certainly capable of more than a 10x8" size print.

In that respect they have definitely moved on from the "crap but better than nothing at all" device of just a few years ago.

Ambient light is still the limiting factor, I've yet to see one deal with difficult lighting conditions well.  I don't see the point of a LOMO camera when most camera phones exhibit most of the (desirable?) image issues of a LOMO camera/film (or have a built-in LOMO filter).

Interesting article from DPREVIEW

Summary

Quote
It’s sobering to look back at the old reviews of the cameras that we included. The earliest, the Canon EOS10D was a marvel of 2003. Phil Askey from DPReview described it as “the absolute best in its class, with the best image quality, lowest high sensitivity noise, superb build quality and excellent price.” He described the “Excellent resolution”, the “Noise free ‘silky smooth’ images”, with “very low noise levels even at ISO 1600.” The EOS 10D ran rings around the film that we’d been using for 50 years in terms of clarity and freedom from grain.

Yet it’s comprehensively humbled by modern phones. The iPhone out-shoots it, and the Nokia out-resolves it, all by huge margins.

HTC Desire S ?

It's done a nice job of difficult light.  The detail in the tree branches is ridiculous for a "pin hole" lens.

Just looking at your FLIKR stuff.  Apart from the obvious telephoto lens, it's not obvious, quality wise, where the HTC photos run into the D80 photos.

I'm tempted to drive out to a favourite photo spot, armed with all my family's cast off phones and do a head-to-head.

If the exposure is spot on and within a credible range then the Desire S does very well. As soon as you want telephoto, action, or difficult exposures then it falls down on enlargement to full screen. There is almost no detail in the shadow - the D80 would have kept some (and the D610 a bit more) but one was at home and the other at work.

Just got a new (Mk2) Motorola Moto G.  It's a £149 phone so nothing special but it has an 8Mp camera on the back and a 2Mp "selfie" camera on the front.

I'm always amazed by the pin-hole "selfie" cameras, that they manage to produce anything at all but check this out...

The top photo is in 6Mp mode (widescreen) and the bottom is the 2Mp "pin-hole" camera.  Perfectly usable for a 6x4 print.
In fact, in some respects, it's actually better.

The main camera resolves detail, colours and contrast better but I'm still impressed by the bottom image (after a bit of tweaking to get come contrast and sharpness back).

The lens is perhaps a millimetre in diameter at most.  Incredible.

My first chance to play with the MOTO G Mk2.  Oct 2104.

It's clear to me that, even with a fairly cheap (if you can consider a £150 phone cheap) phone, forgetting your "real" camera is getting to be much less of an issue, as long as you understand the limitations of the lens and sensor size.

I don't have the originals so here are 2 new ones, straight out of the phone, stood in the same spot (not zoomed, that's just the focal lengths of the 2 lenses)

To put it in perspective, I paid about £300, in 2001, for a 2Mp Fuji.  I then had to pay about £50 for a 256Mb card (I think that's what I paid).
I put 32Gb of storage in the phone for £12.  It would take me quite a while to list all the functions of a modern Android phone (Video player, Music system, diary......etc, etc for a hundred other functions).

It's all pretty extraordinary to think about the tech available in a mobile phone.
I know that the Guildford Space Centre use mobile phones for the internals of some of their satellite experiments because they have all the tech they need (GPS, powerful processors, accelerometers, powerful "radio" transmitters..).

The latest batch of phones have 4K video capability (which says as much about their processing power as their video capability).

Here's some 720p footage from mine at the weekend.  Obviously I wouldn't have said no to 1080p but hey-ho, it's not too bad.

Agreed, the tech in mobiles is amazing. Pity it cant improve the weather.

More from the MOTO G

(Note.  I found that the App "Camera Awesome" allowed me to override the exposure setting better than some photo Apps. You can select where to focus and, separately, take an exposure reading from another area.  This means, for example, that you can expose for a dark subject even when the supplied camera really wants to expose for a bright sky as in the Cathedral shot, which would be a silhouette otherwise ).

It's going to take some time to familiarise myself with its shortcomings but, like today, it was better than having no camera when forced to kill time for an hour in Salisbury.

That's excellent stuff, Lee, thanks.  But really, a camera and a cathedral and you are "forced to kill time"?!  You'll be telling me next that being from Stockport forced you to support Manchester Utd.

OK  I admit it, Salisbury isn't such a bad place to be stuck in for an hour, and, on the subject of Stockport County, I always said I'd support County if they ever played Manchester United in any tournament.  But don't worry, I've spent several miserable damp evenings at Edgeley Park as well as less miserable ones at O.T.

One from the Motorola Moto G Mk2 today.

Given nice sunny conditions it is now no longer an issue when you leave your "real" camera at home.  For a £150 phone it doesn't half produce nice results as a camera.

Grabbed my wife's Samsung Galaxy 5S as we drove home this evening.

It's a photogenic spot on the River test nearby but the Galaxy is a heck of a phone when it comes to image quality.  Very impressed.  Did a much better job than my Motorola Moto G (which I've been impressed with).  Mind you it is 3x the price.

The household is about to take delivery of a (too mind-boggling expensive for me) Galaxy S7 Edge.  I'm interested to see what results that gives.

One thing is clear to me though.  If you just want traditional 6x4 prints or images to simply display on another phone then the £100 Motorola Moto G is fantastically adequate as a camera. The differences only really start to emerge once you drill down and start pixel-peeping.  a 10" Tablet starts to reveal the quality of the Samsung S5 camera.

For reference here is an image from a Canon S120 compact (albeit a >£400 compact when released).
It was set to a very wide 24mm, so it's not a perfect comparison.

For a well lit, wide-angle, scene, with no difficult lighting (high contrast or very flat) then you may as well reach for a phone as a camera. Certainly a simple, £100, Jpeg-only compact camera won't buy you much extra.

Add difficult lighting, or the need for nice portratits, then the RAW capability of a decent camera and optical zoom, are really needed to get something decent.

It would be an interesting challenge to do some portraits using a phone camera.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (my new hand-me-down).

It would make a high quality 20x16" print no bother.

Here's a 1920x1080 pixel crop

It's a step up in phone camera quality for me.  Dynamic range is a bit limited (or maybe I'm just not used to jpegs any more).  There's no detail in the whites despite it being a fairly overcast day.

Still, forgetting my camera has become a little bit less of an issue.

Processed RAW image from an EOS 100D for comparison.  Lots more detail in the whites & shadows (Though many people prefer the contrasty, slightly-over-the-top  look. RAW gives you that option as well of course.).

Worth noting that my Wife's new phone, the Galaxy S7 Edge has RAW capability as well.  I need to play.

I used the Zoom function for this one, as we prickly balls of fear like our personal space and I totally get that.  The loss of definition is striking.

Is zoom not pointless on a phone since its a fixed lens. You might just as well take the picture without zoom then crop the result.

Depending on how the phone sensor crops the image you may get better results cropping later from the full-size image.

Not necessarily. The digital zoom will be happening before conversion to JPEG and the loss of resolution that goes with that, so better to do in camera. You could of course test this theory
Title: Re: Camera-Phone Photos

Just seen examples of the iPhone 7 Plus camera(s).

It has 2 cameras mounted next to each other and thus can do all sorts of DoF wizardry.  The way it simulates a shallow depth of field, for portraits and still-life, is pretty astounding.  I have to say I'm really impressed.

Images also seem pin-sharp.  It has optical zoom to an equivalent of 56mm (I think) which is also not such a bad FL for Portraits and should put an end to the dreadful wide-angle Selfie.

So, another nail in the coffin of consumer cameras?  Yes I have to say so.  Phone-cameras (or are they camera-phones?) have killed off the compact camera market and are making inroads into the "Pro-sumer" market as well.

However... it's worth remembering that the iPhone 7 Plus is >£700.  That still buys a serious amount of "real" camera, especially if you buy used.

I suppose that it suggests that phones with twin-cameras, and similar features, will be ubiquitous in 3-4 years time and the big camera manufacturers will be struggling to shift anything but high-end equipment.

It's an amazing technological progression really.  It used to be the Kodak 110 "Instamatic" that democratised photography but now it's the phone, with "DSLR like Quality" (Apple's words).

I still need to go out and test my Wife's Samsung Galaxy S7 "Edge".

A smart phone with a decent camera might well cost the same as a good quality "real" camera but you can do Facebook and make phone calls onna "real" camera  ;D

True, and that's why the consumer camera market is almost dead.

However... £100 gets you a pretty good Smartphone with a decent camera (Motorola MOTO G) and £200 gets you a bloody good pocket camera.
That still leaves you £420 for Beer rather than buy an iPhone 7 Plus.

Fairly compelling.

I mean, we all perhaps need to step back and take a breath.  £720 for a phone!  We may be getting carried away.

I suppose it's how you value stuff. My iPhone 6s cost over £600 in January and I love it. Super smartphone and amazing camera. Value for money in my book. Once I've had it two years I'll sell it on and upgrade to the latest model.

£720 for a pocket supercomputer/tricorder that can take photos, make phone calls, tell you where you are, access the combined knowledge of humanity and play pokemon.

The only reason not to buy one is that a £150 pocket supercomputer can do most of that almost as well.

It deals with details in the shadows better but, in these "ideal" conditions, almost any camera would do a decent job.

I need to test the S7 in more testing conditions.  It can shoot RAW files so I may see what it can do with some difficult backlight shots.

You could get a high quality 16x10" print off either camera though, something you couldn't say about any 110 Instamatic camera (not even the Pentax 110).

Yeah but if you look real close you'll see that bee has an iPhone 7 and thinks your S6 is shite.  You should see the close ups you can get with an iPhone7!

That's really nice.  Would be a nice abstract with all the colours dialled up to 11 perhaps

Just playing... to see if a work by the great artist Salvatore would look nice on the wall of my mediterranean villa (if I had a Villa).

I just inherited my Wife's Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge!!!

I haven't been that bothered by which phone I own before.  For the last five years I've always had one that was Ok in "an emergency".  Lately they have clearly stepped up the game.

Now though I'm quite excited.  I can shoot in RAW at 12Mp and edit in Lightroom.  Testing it tonight on an evening walk.

Edit.  It's a really impressive camera.  RAW lets me dig out an image from a poorly lit scene..

Good pics.  Since getting a MotoG5 I've used the phone more than my Lumix LX3.  This is partly due to convenience (smaller/double click power button and camera opens immediately), but mainly because the phone camera (12MP) is consistently pretty decent, and seems to cope well with tricky lighting owing to HDR functionality (On, Off, Auto) etc.  Macro is good, but I find I need to be careful with the autofocus.

Update on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

I went to Mottisfont yesterday in my Motorhome.  I had my DSLR and a very nice Canon S120 Compact (I'd call it a Pro-level pocket camera).  I took neither with me for the walk round Mottisfont.
I'm perfectly happy to use the phone for my "Snaps" now.

When you consider that the lens is about 3mm in diameter I think it's a modern miracle how much detail and "range" it can capture.  Very, very, impressed with it.

Note.  Image above was RAW and edited in a RAW editor + Photoshop.

Nice one LEE.

I have a DSLR which I have never really bothered to master and its a pain to lug about.  I'm only a snapper really but do sometimes use the filters built into my iPhone 7's photo capability or I use Instagram filters.  I see no need to use a "proper" camera when I can produce photos like this...

My benchmark for "Snapper" is the '60/'70s Olympus Trip camera.  It was the 35mm camera you'd take out if you couldn't be bothered carrying an SLR and would give you perfectly acceptable results.

I think we're at the point where phone-cameras have reached/exceeded that benchmark.  I certainly can't think of a single reason I'd take an Olympus Trip over my phone now.  What I may do is try a bit of "gritty Street Photography" (The natural home of the Olympus Trip....and ..gulp...Leicas) and see how that looks using my phone.

I remember the Olympus Trip!  I'm sure my Dad had one or something similar.

The other great thing about camera phones is how easy they make it to share photos which is something i love doing.  And I love being able to look back on my photos as they are all associated with great memories.  If have 1896 on my phone going back to February 2014.

At the risk of comments about "Get a shave" (I work at home, nobody sees me, OK?)

Here's a selfie (trying not to look like a selfie) portrait using the S7 Edge.  It's in quite low light and "grainy" but I'd be happy to use it for portraits of others at a push.

What you need to remember is the wide-angle lens distorts subjects close-up.  Better to move away slightly, longer than arms length, and crop in later.

Must finish documenting that lot. I kinda hit a lull in 2002.

On the basis that a fondleslab is basically just a giant phone, I'll put this one here:

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.  A camera on a tablet is a lot less useful than one on a phone, but I'm repeatedly amazed at how good this one can be in low light.  It takes respectably decent snaps in normal indoor lighting conditions.  This one's well past the noise limit, but given the subject matter, it's still a pleasing photo[1].

I doubt my phone (2nd gen MotoG that refuses to die) would manage to see more than the brighter fire-lit surfaces and some of the ground bottom-left.

[1] Apart from the Pot Noodle, obviously :)

I never thought phones would get to this point

We're in the Alps right now.  I have two cameras with me, an iPhone 7, its taking beautiful stills, I've even used it for a bit of video.  I also have a GoPro Hero5 Black, which is producing some superb video from a mount attached to the accessory T-bar on the front of my Surly.  Yes, I know the GoPro isn't a phone camera, but my point is its amazing what you can get out of kit that's relatively inexpensive.

Another advantage of digital photography is that they don't deteriorate (They are just subject to total catastrophic loss en-masse).

I used to think that, but then I saw the sort of thing my mother-in-law gets up to with digital images.

I reckon it's easier to prevent catastrophic loss of digital data than the canonical shoebox full of negatives, it's just that most people don't think it'll happen to them so can't be arsed.

Hope you don't mind.  I was seeing what was left in that photo and how recoverable it was.

Don't mind at all. Cheers!
I have many old slides that could do with a similar treatment. One day I might get round to it.

If you project slides onto a big white wall you can prepare your camera to save lots of time.  Take a custom white balance, dial in some manual picture profile settings ..etc (so yo udon' thave to do it al lin Photoshop)

Ah, but that would require the purchase of a projector. I used a light box for the one I posted.

Geologising. Tromso was a stop on the way to Spitsbergen from Oslo (in that airplane). We picked up a boat in Tromso and spent the next month living on it.

Ah!  Another saxophone-playing geoscientist?

I was then, briefly. Now I'm just saxophone playing.

I spent the early years of my career geologising on boats - but for engineering studies, not petroleum.  But that was 40 years before I launched into learning to play the sax. Good fun though, chucking side scans, boomers, maggies and various bottom samplers off the arse end of workboats, and living on Dutch coffee.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.  I could have done a better job with my DSLR but not in the 10 seconds it took to take this photo with my phone.  It would have taken much effort in Photoshop to do this with my camera.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge + Snapseed editor.  I don't regret not having my "good" camera with me at all.

Another advantage of digital photography is that they don't deteriorate (They are just subject to total catastrophic loss en-masse).

I used to think that, but then I saw the sort of thing my mother-in-law gets up to with digital images.

Ob-xkcd:

I reckon it's easier to prevent catastrophic loss of digital data than the canonical shoebox full of negatives, it's just that most people don't think it'll happen to them so can't be arsed.
I learned the hard way, so now got my photos in the cloud, on 2-3 hard disk in house and one off site.

I think the xkcd is good but missed out the step where the only way you can send photos was to put them into a word.doc - shudders.

They covered that one ages ago:

Sod it.  I can't look at one xkcd cartoon without looking at a dozen.

I wonder if they've done one about that.
