That's excellent stuff, Lee, thanks.  But really, a camera and a cathedral and you are "forced to kill time"?!  You'll be telling me next that being from Stockport forced you to support Manchester Utd.

peter

OK  I admit it, Salisbury isn't such a bad place to be stuck in for an hour, and, on the subject of Stockport County, I always said I'd support County if they ever played Manchester United in any tournament.  But don't worry, I've spent several miserable damp evenings at Edgeley Park as well as less miserable ones at O.T.

I think I'll see what the App "FV-5" is like.  Apparently it allows a lot of manual control of phone cameras.

No photo to post but just to say that pcolbeck junior has a Nokia Windows phone with a 20 megapixel camera. The photos are quite stunning really. The OS is horrible though (well I think so, pcolbeck junior loves it).
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

One from the Motorola Moto G Mk2 today.

Given nice sunny conditions it is now no longer an issue when you leave your "real" camera at home.  For a £150 phone it doesn't half produce nice results as a camera.

It never ceases to amaze me just how much detail can be resolved through a lens 2mm in diameter.

Lee on Solent?

 :D

16km East of Lee on Solent.  Near the road-bridge to Hayling Island, my Back to the Royal Oak pub (yes, the Royal Oak is in a rather splendid location).

Here's a simple pic from my phone. The thing is, I cannot remember where on earth it was taken. Any ideas?

Grabbed my wife's Samsung Galaxy 5S as we drove home this evening.

It's a photogenic spot on the River test nearby but the Galaxy is a heck of a phone when it comes to image quality.  Very impressed.  Did a much better job than my Motorola Moto G (which I've been impressed with).  Mind you it is 3x the price.

Last of the evening sun on the nicest day of 2015 so far.

Here's the extreme Southwest of Dorset on a sunny day (today, in fact).
  Shot with a Sony Z1.

I'm still very pleased with the phone.

Weirdly if you remove the shell from a Snail it makes them more sluggish.

Yep, I stared at that photo for quite a while, too.  Went there a few weeks ago, after doing an event in Leeds.

We have the Nat Geog that originally appeared in/on.  Funny feeling having seen the beginning of something that later became as famous.

Motorola Moto G (2nd gen) £100

BIGGER

Samsung Galaxy S5 (£350 ?)

BIGGER

The household is about to take delivery of a (too mind-boggling expensive for me) Galaxy S7 Edge.  I'm interested to see what results that gives.

One thing is clear to me though.  If you just want traditional 6x4 prints or images to simply display on another phone then the £100 Motorola Moto G is fantastically adequate as a camera. The differences only really start to emerge once you drill down and start pixel-peeping.  a 10" Tablet starts to reveal the quality of the Samsung S5 camera.

For reference here is an image from a Canon S120 compact (albeit a >£400 compact when released).
It was set to a very wide 24mm, so it's not a perfect comparison.

BIGGER

For a well lit, wide-angle, scene, with no difficult lighting (high contrast or very flat) then you may as well reach for a phone as a camera. Certainly a simple, £100, Jpeg-only compact camera won't buy you much extra.

Add difficult lighting, or the need for nice portratits, then the RAW capability of a decent camera and optical zoom, are really needed to get something decent.

It would be an interesting challenge to do some portraits using a phone camera.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (my new hand-me-down).

It would make a high quality 20x16" print no bother.

Here's a 1920x1080 pixel crop

It's a step up in phone camera quality for me.  Dynamic range is a bit limited (or maybe I'm just not used to jpegs any more).  There's no detail in the whites despite it being a fairly overcast day.

Still, forgetting my camera has become a little bit less of an issue.

Processed RAW image from an EOS 100D for comparison.  Lots more detail in the whites & shadows (Though many people prefer the contrasty, slightly-over-the-top  look. RAW gives you that option as well of course.).

Worth noting that my Wife's new phone, the Galaxy S7 Edge has RAW capability as well.  I need to play.
