That is a pretty cat.

I think certain materials feel more scratchable to cats, especially anything rough, which they can get a good purchase on.  The scratching posts and boards you can buy have a particularly rough and uncomfortable surface, but the cats love it for cleaning their claws on.

Talisker doesn't particularly scratch the leather sofa, but there are a couple of small groups of holes which are suggestive of him having an unsteady moment, and having to use his ground anchors. ;D

What he really loves is the corner of a cardboard box, there are a few (from the house move, which I've almost finished unpacking... Aham...) which have been shredded by him.

Hazel is pretty good and only uses her scratching post or anything made of wicker (the washing basket and a couple of wicker storage boxes we have). If she is cross that you aren't doing what she wants (feeding her on demand or opening a door quick enough) she will have a go at the carpet though.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Talisker playing with a plastic ball containing cat treats.  The idea is that you keep your cat amused, and limit his eating, by putting any treats inside the ball, and adjust the hole size so it takes some effort to get the snacks out.

Talisker, it turns out, is very good at doing this.  He emptied it almost as fast as he could eat each munchy which he got out!
Actually, it is rocket science.

Leather, and suede to some extent, is a really good non-clawable fabric.

I'll have to get a photo of my parents' chair back...

Not surprisingly it's always covered with a throw now.

This is as far as Talisker got today, he doesn't do snow. ;D

He won't go out through his cat flap, although I can't really blame him, since it looks like this:

Montezuma did about ten minutes outside in the snow last night.  He came back in, made his way to his favourite spot in front of the radiator and steamed  :)

Yup, Kafe was the cat who left home to live with my mother; mum had a black laborador as well, the cat learned to beg because she saw the dog doing so and getting fed, realised there was food to be had and tried it herself. She then sussed that hoovering crumbs also worked and one day mum wandered into the kitchen and found the cat cleaning out the microwave.

Kafe was about 2 years old in that picture, she died in 2006 aged 17 so it obviously didn't do her much harm.

I would also like to point out that when she lived with us she was called Kafer, mum embellished it to Kaypher, way more letters than is strictly neccessary.

Anyone else think she looks like Liz with that pose?

And we are able to oblige these days.
I don't know what happened to him prior to arriving at the Cats Protection place, but belly rubbing was a very risky undertaking until maybe two months ago - he's been at Taylor Towers for about eight months, and is only now able to relax properly with us - in fact the general level of eating and sleeping is such that we may have to change his name from "Max" to "Mr Tubby"  :D

Talisker is also on for the Mr Tubby award, having put on 1kg over the last 3 months (44% increase in body weight!)  I'm hoping that with the warmer weather, he'll spend more time outdoors hunting, and generally decimating the local population of anything smaller than him. :-\  At least he should burn off some of the fuel, and hopefully won't replace that with more energy from the additional food he gains.

Could I just mention: Tiggy. 42 confirmed kills. Yes that's right… 42 mice in the last two years. There must be some kind of 'mouse shop' in somebody's garden near us, and we live in a town.
