A cull with a good stalker will mean a clean fast kill for the animal - without the stress of being herded into a lorry and held in pens in an abattoir.  One minute the deer is chewing away - and the next - gone.

No stress for the deer compared to what we do with other animals.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

The other deer carry on grazing while the chosen ones are fairly silently dropped. The ones to be culled are carefully selected and while they are at it the entire herd is checked for various things, vaccinated as needed, etc.

Wild ones, on the other hand, are at the mercy of fast moving traffic and scrotes that can't shoot.

Yeah but I'm not happy that any are killed, no matter how humanely.  (Just a vague feeling of sadness rather than any firm view).

Just leave them then and they will outgrow the available forage and the weak ones will starve to death.

We could feed the deer.  That'll make Richmond Park more interesting.  It's boring as it is.

(I'm not entirely serious, just sad about killing animals, despite being a meat eater.  I'm just sad, you see).

Does anyone know when the cull is planned this autumn?

Next week I think.  Signs went up a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't pay too much attention other than seeing November.

I will remember to check dates next time I am up there.

Pedestrian gates are locked at around 8pm during the cull - open at 6 or 7 am.
Right! What's next?

Cheers. That rules out a traverse of the park on the 21st.

Maybe not - the cull lasts about two weeks I think - you might be lucky.  I'll be up there sometime in the next few days no doubt and I will remember some more details.

Their mates will only gang up on me and ambush me when I am doing night-time laps over winter (scene of a good number of very near misses).

They usually quote six weeks on the signs but it often gets finished within four to five - assume it will be on for the whole of November certainly.

Re-introduce the wolf, that'll solve the deer problem and liven the park up a bit.

I think this is more likely.

I guess we will either have to traverse around the western edge or the use the quicker eastern edge of the park using the A3 cycle path  :-X

Six weeks from Monday 6 November this year?  Or will it start next week given that the "1st Mon in Nov" is not until the 6th?  Maddeningly hard to find confirmation online.

I'll keep a look out for the signs, as I go through there on a daily basis.

I forgot this morning as I went over Kingston Hill and in via Robin Hood Gate which doesn't have large friendly signs for the benefit of motorists as they can't use that gate.

Will try and remember later.

It started this Monday and theoretically will carry on for up to six weeks but as usual I suspect it will be shorter.

I clocked the sign the other day.

Six weeks starting the first Monday in November, and again for six weeks from the first Monday in February.

Closure is 8pm to 7.30am.

Still currently on - was late leaving yesterday so it was a bit of a race to get through in time.

The February Cull is still on I think and there's now an internal closure of the path that goes through the middle.  There are signs up in the park saying it's from today for 'improvements' until April.

No idea what the improvements are unless it's to improve drainage.  Hoping that it isn't being opened up for vehicular access.  I'll take a picture tomorrow if I remember.
