World Championships 2011 (spoilers)
« on: 19 September, 2011, 04:49:56 pm »
Not a bad first day for GB - silver for Elinor Barker in the Junior Women's TT, less than two seconds behind the winner. Results of U23 Men's TT not in yet but ominously, looks like a second gold for the Aussies. Strength in depth in their squad...

So, what are everyone's predictions for the big races? Double gold for Britain in the elite men's races not out of the question, but I reckon Wiggo is going to have to do something really special to beat Tony Martin in the TT. I think he'll get silver though. For the road race, I'm saying it's between Cav, Sagan and Gilbert. If it's a straight sprint, you'd have to back Cav, but who knows what might happen? I don't think I've seen Cav up against Sagan. That could be an interesting contest. Disappointed Renshaw and Degenkolb won't be there to take on their old team-mate.

In the women's races... double gold for Emma Pooley?

2 X Aussie gold today.
It looks like the Pro's TT will be on wet roads (cobblestones), so it will be the strongest riders with best technical skills.
Like  Cancellara and Martin, but not Grabsch.
It looks like a wet ride Sunday too, so I'll tend to guess on the strong Norwegians and Gilbert.

For those of us without Eurosport, Men's TT is on BBC red button (Freeview 301) now.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

A great "Sherwenism" from Hugh Porter just now: commenting on a New Zealand rider, he said "Really moving the Kiwi, absolutely flying."  ;D

I think poor old Hugh Porter is going senile. He told us in Caerphilly last week that Russell Hampton would take the KoM all the way to London, when Jonathan Tiernan-Locke had attacked every climb over the previous 48hrs and was within a couple of points of taking the jersey.

I'm afraid I think that Brad's new super slim shapre might have helped him in the mountains, but it's not doing him any favours in time trials.
Got to be Spartacus for the TT surely?

I think it's a brave man who bets against Tony Martin on current form.

Some horrendous drafting going on! Of course it's only by riders who are at least 1m30 off the pace, so not all that important really ...

I'm not that excited watching the TT, but I presume they'll also show the road race on the Red Button.

Grabsch is going quicker than the Aussie too. Edit: Wiggo in second place ahead ofbehind Grabsch at halfway.

Martin over a minute up on Wiggo at the 3/4 mark. Phenomenal.

Cancellara's going well too - on course for 2nd, by the look of it.

Wiggo finishes provisional first, probably 3rd. Good ride but Martin is looking unbeatable.

(Only thanks to Spartacus overcooking a corner near the end though!)

Pleased for Tony Martin, he's been knocking on the door for some time and was unlucky with a puncture last year.

Fantastic ride for silver by Wiggins considering the Vuelta he's just had.

It was almost sad to see Cancellara reduced to that level of desperation but you can't fault him for effort.
