mllePb has granted permission for me to have a go with her Garmin.   What does the panel recommend for route planning and then loading onto the Garmin unit please?

Basecamp.  It's the only sane way to do Routes.  If you're happy to work with Tracks, then all sorts of things will work.

(If you don't understand the difference, that's the first thing you need to do.)

Are you talking about the Garmin Edge 500 or the Garmin Edge Touring?

2 very different machines.

It's the Touring but I'm sure that I recollect that is was called the 500 Touring when it was acquired last year

No they are 2 totally different machines.

They have always been known just as Touring and Touring Plus.

But anyway, for route planning I use RideWithGps. Export the created route map as a TCX on to your computer, the drag and drop it into the 'new files' folder on the Garmin. When you switch the machine on the map will be in your courses/routes.

The Edge Touring is mostly just an Edge 800/810, but with different software. But yes, it has just been branded as Edge Touring or Edge Touring Plus.

For route planning, Strava is pretty good. Based on OSM, plus knows what roads are popular for cycling. It can export as GPX or TCX, which should work with the Edge Touring.
