[LEL17] Fixed riders?
« on: 06 August, 2017, 11:59:25 am »
I had conversions during LEL trying to work out how many people were riding fixed. I can think of:

  • Deano
  • Jonathan Ellis
  • Justin Jones
  • Simon P. (DNF)
  • Wilkyboy

Who were the others?
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Although I can't add any names to the list, I should be grateful to read of any fixed riders, and their gearings, for inclusion in an end-of-season review to be published in Arrivee.  Hoping to celebrate many epic and audacious rides, even those that didn't complete the full distance.

Regards.
At the end of the day, when all's said and done, there's usually a lot more said than done.

I saw a Giant (Bowery?) fixed parked up at Thirsk quite early on in the return leg. Alongside a Pompino

I remember Garry.  He was at our overspill hall at Eskdalemuir, where he slept for at least 6 hours, I think.  We chatted in the morning and it seemed his plan was to get back for a certain time AND NOT BEFORE because of transport arrangements.  When he set off, he looked completely fresh and sprinted away as if he was going to the shops.  Really impressive.

Privileged to have ridden alongside Garry K and Tomj as part of Acme dynamite group on and off between Alston and Eskdalemuir. Never saw him grimace on the Yard Moss climb, and makes it look too easy. Disappointed not to witness Tomj legendary pink shorts though.

I was fixed, 70" and 66" on my Hubjub Posh Hack frame. Sadly, DNF due to an ankle injury.

Not aware of any other fixers beyond those posted above.

I'm pretty sure I saw one of the riders from the far East on a fixed. He always seemed very cheerful as he passed me, going a fair bit faster (I'm not really sure how I kept getting in front of him). He made it look a lot easier than it must have been ...

Telbert from Bristol's name above plus Paul Manesseh rode on a Genesis Flyer with a 68" gear (don't think he frequents the forum but is part of the Hackney club). I thought James Skillen from Hackney was also riding (Genesis Day One?).

Sounds like a complete nutter! I hear he rode a 200km ECE afterwards too.  :P

It's looking like a pretty decent ratio of starters:finishers. Why doesn't everyone ride fixed?

I walked a bit into Brampton southbound and one of the Essex Alps. More to do with it being late and me being knackered than owt else. I couldn't be faffed with flipping the hub and I stuck with 72" or so (44 x 16) all the way round.

I did respect the route, too ;)

What you lot do is your own business. I walked a few nasty lumps when the granny ring got too tough. Riding any sort of decent fixed gear for the flatlands would increase that practice.
