Title: Adding new map region to Vista HCx
Post by: andyoxon on 03 August, 2018, 12:08:24 pm
I need to add a different map download (OSM generic routable) for a region in Europe to my Vista HCx.  Do I just remove the existing UK file mapping by deleting off the etrex SD card, then installing the new files?  If memory serves (not done this for quite a while) this  site http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ provides a utility to install map into basecamp (?)

Yes just Copy-Paste the gmapsupp.img you get to Device\GARMIN\
(overwrite the existing file - better still copy the existing file onto another drive first)

I've not used Basecamp for a long time but it's not necessary if you just want the file on your HCx

Yes.
You may prefer to copy the old file off the card so you can switch back more easily after your tour.

The HCx can use one map file only, which must be called gmapsupp.img, and located in the Garmin folder on the card.

More recent Garmins can use several map files, so what you download may have a different name.
There are utilities for merging different .img map files in to one,but it's probably easier to just download what you want from openstreetmap.nl.

If you have the maps in BaseCamp, you can use the MapInstall to create a combined file. ie select all of the tiles at once, then send it to the Etrex.

Thanks!  That may be handy.  I'll probably update my UK maps and see if I can combine with new alps region...

Once I figured out how to use mkgmap to customise the style, largely so it doesn't show loads of icons for POIs in turns.
It creates the gmapsupp.img from downloaded osm data.
Created a makefile to do it https://github.com/bjtaylor1/garminmaps

Will do Britain and France by default but you can easily change this.

Plus change the routing  priorities of roads plus ensure non of the off road is routable (if you want it that way) , and change at what resolutions the various bits of the map show including road names.

A bit beyond what our OP wants though.

Indeed it is what I do as well as change all the colours and icons to what I want.

I had a very minimalist Etrex navigational experience on Saturday's ride in the Chilterns, since I forgot that my detailed OSM mapping was still several hundred miles away in France.   :P  So just the arrowhead with the magenta track & yellow background...  but all was fine, almost liberating   ;)
