Title: App information gathering tentacles...
Post by: andyoxon on 07 May, 2021, 02:52:11 pm
I've just uninstalled Fakebook from my phone (Android).  It gathers info on one's use of just about every app on the phone - to what level I'm not sure.

So does Fakebook pay other apps/Google to gather info as 3rd party app 'cookies'?  If I delete fakebook, or whatsapp & messenger as well, off my phone, is the info still gathered anyway?

Using Signal successfully these days - mainly for family chat atm.

Not sure about apps, but half the Web is tracked by Facebook courtesy of those "Follow us on Facebook" and/or "Log in with Facebook" buttons.

Good work - I’ve made a real effort to achieve that - Tice, Banks, Fox…

All I've done is occasionally throw insults in the direction of Wullie Rennie and D.Ross
Oh and I responded to a Scottish Family Party post with "Ah great it's the child abuse party".

Facebook's response to that was to show me the "Freedom Alliance" and "Scottish Libertarian Party's"* Facebook Groups, curiously in the same screen as "Brexiteers wrecked by Brexit".

* I'm not sure if that's the same ains as wot goosestepped and wore stars of david before getting kicked out of the Glasgow count but they're certainly as batshit deluded, which makes my response to DRoss' letter facebookpost of "Yer deluded ye daft loon" (yes deliberate choice of Scots, I'd have given a Gaelic translation if I knew enough too).

If Facebook do now make you see more of the people you troll, their gamey is definitely heedin up the poley.

Farcebok once recommended Christchurch* Conservatives and Conservative Women's pages to me on consecutive days, and then followed it up with some brand of disposable nappies, in Vietnamese.  So every time Zuckerberg appears on the idiots' lantern banging on about “targeted advertising” I point, and laugh.

I think the problem is that many application developers rely on third party software development kits and other random dependencies, and these sometimes/often have some element of data snooping in order to provide integrations with Facebook and other big tech owned data schlurping web real estate.

The only way to be sure is to install LineageOS (fork of Android) (or other supported OS) and then only install apps from sources such as the F-Droid store. And then you can't be 100% sure. There is an app called Classy Shark Exodus which can scan apps for embedded trackers and at least according to that, my personal phone is tracker free. But I end up eschewing a lot of the apps that the cool kids use. I get all the functionality of a Googlified Android Phone via Nextcloud, so pictures, contacts, calendar etc.. are all synced/backed up and setting up a new phone should I lose the old one is a case of installing some Nextcloud apps and signing into them.
