I've seen a picture of a woman who has had a bird tattooed across her belly and groin so that her pubic hair makes the plumage, but I can't find the image.

A bald eagle?

Kirst,   I have a very similar tattoo to the one on your foot on my upper arm.  It's not the best in the world, but I quite like it that way.  It's fading quite a bit now too (I got it 16-ish years ago), which I also like.

All the men in my family have tattoos, I always thought it "normal". I like my uncle's on his forearm which is now more than 50 years old - it is more of a black silhouette now which always seemed very manly to me.  My wee brother is 21 and has about 5 really fashionable tattoos, personally I think more old fashioned, maybe a bit crap ones are more cool.  My wife however does not agree and hates the fact that I have one.

I've got a recumbent chainring bite on my right bicep.  Something to do with a Windcheetah, a dark room and ten pints of Pedigree.

You really shouldn't let a Windcheetah drink that much...

Swallows are also the symbol of freedom.  Often found on ex-lags, tattooed on the joint between the thumb and forefinger.

Swallows on the hands generally meant (at least in HMP Barlinnie and Saughton) that you had "fast hands", rather than freedom, and suggested you were a bit hard. Personally, I got mine for the symbolism of home as they were originally a sailors first sign that he was close to land, and as Andy says, one of the few birds that return to their birthplace every year. They are also one of many birds that choose a mate for life, so symbolise loyalty.

This thread has inspired me to book a consultation appointment to alter my tattoo on my shoulder.

Excellent! Where are you getting it done?

Right, that's my consultation over. The simple 3-cornered Celtic knot on my shoulder is going to become a 5-pointed star with knotwork. I'm getting it done next Saturday and I'm very excited about it.

I was amused to see that Tribe was full of freshers getting eyebrow piercings.

I'm going goth to my birthday party. I was a bit of a half-hearted goth as a teenager so I'm really going for it this time.

You should move to Northampton.  Goths never died out there.  They sit in St Giles' churchyard smoking dope, occasionally getting beaten up by the local chavs.

There was a shop at the top of town called The Black Rose which only sold goth clothing and accessories, but it's closed now.  Maybe they now have to take a train to Milton Keynes, which is a bigger shopping town and positively inspires widespread gothdom.
