I'm now Vampire proof.....
« on: 29 May, 2009, 04:36:47 am »
I've just eaten dinner at 'The Stinking Rose' in San Francisco. It's a specialist garlic restaurant.......

Bagna Cauda, whole cloves of garlic served with anchovies and olive oil, spread on warm bread....

Black liguini with seafood in a very garlicy sauce. I had to get medieval on the crabs ass with pliers...

Garlic ice cream with chocolate sauce. Delicious.

$47 including a decent beer.

I've got a looooong flight back to Heathrow tomorrow, I hope my fellow passengers like the stuff......

Stop it, you're making me hungry. I love garlic. And olives. And pasta. And bread. Damn you.  >:(

I got home last night to find my Thursday night pasta left on the hob, warming.
I had some home made brown bread in the bread bin so I toasted 3 chunks.
I used our new garlic device to grind the garlic into a sort of fresh paste.
I then spread one clove on each piece of toast.  3 cloves of fresh garlic, not toasted or heated other than touching the warm bread.
Oh boy it was lovely.

Only 3 cloves ?  I was given a metal dish full of warm, fragrant oil, and containing a good few dozen cloves, 3 foccacia rolls were used for this, the 4th mopped up the pasta sauce.

I've visibly lost inches from my waistline on this trip so I'm allowed to pig out :-)

When I went to this delightful protest event at Torness, someone else was charged with making the picnic.

We had garlic sandwiches.  ;D

And a few miles down the road is Gilroy, where they have a big annual garlic festival.

I was sensible enough to leave the hotel room windows open.........

I do hope the side effects wear off before the flight or I'm going to be doing a lot of apologising...

We've just harvested some garlic from the garden which had been left planted from last year, and started growing again.  Time to start cooking.

Bagna Cauda!  Nom! Nom! Nom! - one of our family favourites.

We use it as a dip with lots of raw vegetables and really good bread.

We also roast garlic and eat it as a vegetable - slow cooking seems to destroy most of the morning-after breath effects.

Tonights dinner was seasoned with raw whole garlic cloves marinated in soy sauce,  olive oil, ginger & pepper.

Broderna Olsons Garlic and Shots on Frith Street in Soho. They got garlic-everything, including garlic beer, garlic coffee, etc.
Food is quite decent too, some of it with a quite Scandinavian twist.
Huge vodka-based shot menu, where the best is by far the 'blood shot'. Think a very strong, spicy, garlicky condensed Bloody Mary. (One of my Bloody Mary loving friends, after trying it, asked the waitress : "Does it come in pints"?.

Only downside (aside from the downstairs heavy metal club/bar), is that it's also frequented by the local chapter of Hells Angels.

AQ How do you get on eating out?

Trying to tell the waiter that no - just a bit of garlic or with the big bits picked out is NOT the same as garlic free >:(

I like a bit of garlic but would be worried about eating a lot of it. Doesn't it have a laxative effect?
