2021 Vuelta
« on: 15 August, 2021, 08:30:10 pm »
The third and least prestigious of the Grand Tours.

Roglic doesn't seem to have many big challengers.

Quest TV showed Polish Border Force instead of the prologue TT (the muppets also showed stage 1 instead of stage 4 of the Giro earlier this year), so I can't comment on that.

Just watching stage 2. Beautiful tarmac, hot, sunny, and barren, like a spaghetti western.  Spain is big and empty.

Ah, the joys of Carlton Kirby's endless inanities.

It's almost (emphasis on "almost") enough to make one nostalgic for Liggett and Sherwin past their prime.  :demon:

I want Sean Kelly to keep rambling drearily monotonally about fuck all so that Carlton doesn't have time to talk shite. That's what it's come to  :hand:

Ha, yes my recorder picked up the Polish Border Force thing as well. Shouldn't have been a problem as it's recorded direct from Eurosport as well but that gave me  highlights of Strade Bianche  :demon:

Well, yesterday's stage shook things up a bit, for the wrong reason.  Surprisingly, the frequently-horizontal Miguel Angel Lopez seems to have done well out of the carnage, as he's faIrly high on GC.

The Vuelta does seem to be considered the "chipper"1 of the grand tours, given how much attention it's getting.

The Beeb's gone big on Jakobsen getting his first win after his head was smashed up in in a crash last year, with "the carnage" as RZ puts it barely meriting a mention.

1 A term used to describe 4th-Cat or "unimportant" races where the prize money is about enough to pay for a fish and chip supper on the way home - though in this case, "chicken in a basquet"2 might be more apt. IGMC...

2 I blame the translators of Asterix in Spain for that one. ;D

The tv coverage up that last climb today was abysmal. Much like Carlton's 'banter'.

Did Roglic pull up a bit at the end?

Valverde was fortunate to have that gap in the crash barrier; still nasty.

Looking hot and rocky today.  Spanish scenery makes good TV.  They never comment in the many bullrings, for some reason  :hand:

Cycling News has him “breaking down in dears” ...

Did they have Movistar's tic-tacs AI write that?

Also, I love how the Quest highlights just dump you in the middle of some coverage without any preamble as to what might have happened already.

Are Quest showing coverage from Eurosport? I’m watching it on ES, and I never thought I’d be missing Rob Hatch. But the Kirby/Kelly combination is dire. Carlton is permanently amused by himself, and John (yes, that’s his name) ‘Yes, well…’ Kelly is only loosely familiar with the English language. He may have been great on a bike, but lucid talking is not a strength of his.

Quest = Eurosport = GCN , all of which = Discovery

That was awful today, spent ages showing us nothing happening on a descent and then suddenly jumped to 3km left on the last (somewhat longer climb).
And then showed us a couple of clips of juicy bits happening at 8-9km to go in the yak at the end. Thanks.
