Last of the 135mm Pompinos...
« on: 27 March, 2022, 07:40:06 pm »
Actually, he's probably not. But I digress.

The Truvativ Elita ISIS that came with my Pompino has given up the ghost. The near side crank is no longer staying on: inspection indicates it is royally buggered and beyond hope. Technology has come on a ways in the 17... 18 (KOFF) years since I bought my lovely blue fixie, and I am bamboozled in my attempt to get him back on the road. As he's currently my main workhorse, I need a solution!

I think there's a 55mm chainline, which would suggest a Shimano FC-M1500 as an option, but that means going to hollowtech, I think, which would mean trying to find a bike shop to face the bottom bracket. Ugh. I live in the middle of nowhere. Also, I'm not sure about running a 9 speed chain on the 11 speed chainring, although I guess I could swap it out for a similar BCD chainring designed for fixies.

I also considered the SRAM Apex1, but that's a 44.5mm chainline, which I don't think will work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd love to shove either another splined cartridge BB in there or even a square taper that will give me the correct chainline, but I'm struggling to find the parts. Is everyone using external bearings these days?

https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=74838.msg1542791#msg1542791 might be helpful. It suggests 47mm.

https://www.paulcomp.com/shop/components/hubs/rear-hubs/fixed-word/ lists 51.6mm for their 135 hub.

https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/345049/ suggests up to 53.5mm for Surly 135 hubs.

Square taper cranks and BBs still exist, though 120+mm BBs are becoming rare.

Thanks both!

Wobbly John tracked down a brand new Truvativ Elita ISIS minus the chainring on Ebay for me. So I've bought that, and I just need to find the relevant bottom bracket and a new chainring.

If I can get another 16 years out of it, I'll either need another bike because rust will have had its way, or I will be too old to be riding fixed gear as my main bike!

When my chainset/ bottom bracket gave up the ghost on my pompino (stronglight and apparently made of cheese) I replaced it with this from SPA cycles

https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m8b0s109p4544/SPA-CYCLES-TD2-TA-Single-Chainset

It's been excellent and combined with a good quality shimano bottom bracket haasn't missed a beat.

Is yours a 135mm (Tigger's Mum's Bathroom Blue) or the later 120mm version?

I have a spa chainset. I did have to file down the backside of the chainside boss to clear the BB cups.
