Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

It's got faster here over the last year... used to be 4.5Mb/s for ages.  We're with TalkTalk (OpalT)

still not quite fast enough for streaming HD video though...

Which is a lot better than it was earlier this year.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Virgin (domestic) 10Meg

Note.  I was struggling to get 4Meg download until Virgin sent an engineer to swap out my ancient NTL modem with a new Virgin one, at which point I started getting what I pay for.

This is our office speed, on a good day. Rather disappointing for a Web Development company...

That's the nature of ADSL I am afraid. The A is Asymmetric.

Not domestic I take it.   :)

As I understand it with phone line BB, the limits on speed are mainly distance to exchange and occasionally hardware e.g. as in Lee's modem.  We're about 1.5-2mls from the exchange, and have a relatively new modem so ~8Mb is probably reasonably good for us.

We also inherited cable with the house, so what kind of speeds would be possible with this in comparison?

In our case it is Asymptomatic.

No but I'm spending more time at work than I'd like to, so it's beginning to feel like home. Holibobs tomorrow for a long weekend, plus only 2 days work next week. :)

A more sedate ~6mbps and 0.5mbps at home, sometimes it synchs at 10mbps and 1mbps but it's not very stable when it does that.

I stopped noticing so much when I moved back to the BT Homehub (to get on BT Fon) as it doesn't have the same monitoring/SNMP capabilities as my old ADSL router...

Which is pretty much what my traffic shaping is configured for (so VOIP and other small packets get priority over HTTP etc).  If I could be arsed to turn it off, the BRAS rate is at 16M, so I should see the best part of 16M/1M

Line currently synced at *peers* 18.9M/1.0M.  I'm a little over 300m from the exchange as the crow flies.
