What the Hell is wrong with the BBC football editor?  Their website headline is "Liverpool THRASH Tottenham".  They persistently say THRASH if any team scores 4 or more.  The actual score was 4 - 2, which is effectively 2 - 0 and by no means a THRASHING.  And I don't support either team.  I'm so lucky to be old enough to have read reports from Hugh McIlvanney, Michael Parkinson, John Arlott and even as far back as Neville Cardus.

Yours sincerely,

Old Bloke

I think thrashing is a fair reflection of the overall performance even if not the final scoreline. They switched off a bit towards the end but the game was already won by then.

Agree on the general point about sports journalists being lazy though.

Weren't Liverpool 4 - 0 up? The journo probably was too pissed to notice Spurs' goals when they occurred.

Should have been more than four, really. They were running Spurs ragged for much of the game.

But then I’ve seen them do the same in other games this season and fail to score any goals at all. Which is why they’re not winning the league.

Crystal Palace 4 - Manchester Seconds 0.  Happy to call that a thrashing (which the BBC's John Bull printing set trotted out as expected).

Next up for them is an in-form, free-scoring Arsenal... what's the next level up from a "thrashing"?

Strong chance Newcastle will finish above them now, which you've got to be happy about.

Sure, but it's severely muted because of the ownership.  What the murderers' takeover has done is make me not care when Newcastle lose but I admit I still smile when they win.  They were "my" team before they were the Saudis' - but I'm still ashamed of myself.

Fair enough. It’s not you who needs to be ashamed of yourself though.

Well done you!  Is it unkind to point out that THRASH is a verb?

I still think it's correct though. :)
Spurs had a shot in the 3rd minute, and the next one was almost halfway through the second half when they were 4-0 down and Liverpool had started trying to give backups minutes (and while Spurs scored 2, Liverpool had a goal ruled out for (legit) offside, and had a number of other significant chances).
But then, I think Liverpool thrashed Utd twice this season, while the scoreboard disagrees! :D

Similarly, Arsenal thrashed them 1-0 yesterday.

Yes!  Liverpool THRASHED to a 3 - 3 draw by Aston Villa.  They don't seem to have learned from their game against Spurs, though I don't know (not having seen it) whether or not it was a case of being careless again after going 3 - 1 up.  Still the best away shirts in the division though.

The Graun's over-by-over report suggested that Villa could have been 5 - 3 up before their last two goals.

Yes, a quick look at the THRASH page of the BBC News site revealed their assessment that it could easily have finished 6 - 6.

It was a very open game. Liverpool were dominant for spells but overall it was much more of an even contest than the Spurs game. Both sides had goals disallowed for offside.

Final day of the premiership and games seem to be going according to predictions. Mostly.

Cough.

It comes to something when the retirement/resignation of one man, even though he's a pretty remarkable and - most unusual in football managers, a seemingly likeable one -  overshadows the rest of the premiership.

Partly because of the relentless monotony of the cheats winning again. They’ve killed the league. For the last few years, Liverpool and now Arsenal have shown that you need to be almost perfect to even get close.

Plenty of people hate Liverpool but at least they feel something about them. No one cares either way about the cheats.

I have a longstanding animosity towards Arsenal (since 1989, mainly) but I’ve been rooting for them since Liverpool’s chances faded.

Not much hope of West Ham doing the sport a favour today alas.

If it hadn’t been for Klopp, the cheats would be making it seven in a row today.

It's David Moyes' final game at West Ham as well. I've felt a bit sorry for him ever since he became Ferguson's successor at Man United. He's been a dedicated journeyman. Given that WH

While I agree they are probably bending the rules, it's still mainly due to their excellent coach that they are dominating. Money buys you top 6, when combined with coaching excellence it gets you trophies.  When Pep calls it a day they will cease to dominate unless they can find his equal. Chelsea cheat, have endless resources but finished 6th

Alan

If you want to believe that, fine. It’s a well worn argument. And a very short-sighted one.

Chelsea no longer have endless resources. Strange coincidence that they are struggling since Abramovich was forced to sell. They only escaped punishment for breaches of psr rules this season by “selling” two hotels to their owner.

Given the resources, you could say the top three look remarkably tight. And then the gaps start. But never mind, next year Villa are going to repeat their European triumph of recent 42 years ago! Aren't they? No?

Radio 3 is playing You'll Never Walk Alone right now! Perhaps not exactly as sung at Anfield.
