Shimano CS-HG700-11 (105) cassette

Is anyone familiar with this cassette which supposedly fits both 10 and 11 speed freehubs?
When test fitting one to a 10 speed hub, the usual 0.5mm spacer was not needed, in fact only once the spacer was out could the lockring be threaded onto the freehub - is this correct?
Also, does this cassette need the spacer when fitted to a 11 speed freehub? About to replace an older 11 speed cassette with this one so good to know before I start (its a Mavic Askium wheel)

Sounds about right.
The tech doc covered iirc (fitted one to an 11spd road freehub late last year)

If it’s the 11-34 then it cantilevers the 34 sprocket towards the spokes like an 11 speed mtb cassette. Hence it fits a 10 speed freehub. You should use the 1.85mm spacer that would fit a 10 speed cassette on an 11 speed freehub. If for some reason the locknut won’t engage properly you might leave it out - but watch how close the mech is to the spokes.

there's no such thing as 'the usual spacer' when fitting a 10s cassette to a 8/9/10s freehub body. If a spacer is required it should be regarded as part of that cassette, in that the cassette won't fit any hub without it.  For example there is a 1.0mm spacer supplied with CS-6600, #17 here;

whereas other 10s cassettes need no spacer at all.

The difference in freehub body length between shimano 11s 'road' freehub bodies and 8/9/10s freehub bodies is 1.85mm. Accordingly CS-HG700-11 is supplied with a 1.85mm spacer which you only need fit if using the cassette on an 11s 'road' freehub body.

As suggested above, keep a weather eye open for how close the RD is to the spokes in bottom gear.    In essence you probably wouldn't get away with the same chainline and a smaller sized largest sprocket (eg by machining a 11-28 11s cassette so that it is short enough to fit a 10s freehub body) because the RD is likely to get too close to the spokes.

Sorry, I was making a couple of assumptions -
It's a 11-34 cassette.
It came with the 1.85mm spacer
Trying it on the 10 speed free hub with the spacer didn't fit. Without the spacer, it was fine.
With the 11 speed cassette without the spacer, the cassette couldn't be tightened up properly and was loose on the freehub and with the spacer, it was fine. It replaced a 11-32 Ultegra cassette which didn't use a spacer.

I think the issue is there are actually three different widths of Shimano cassette. 10 speed is the narrowest, 8/9 speed is in the middle and 11 speed is the widest.

A "10 speed" wheelset usually means it's sized for 8/9 speed cassettes and needs a spacer for 10 speed. There exist a very small number of freehubs that only have width for a 10 speed cassette and nothing else, but it doesn't look like WH-6700 is one of them.

MTB 11 speed cassettes are actually 8/9 speed width, so for your setup you shouldn't need a spacer.
