Further and Faster / Re: New bike for Audax from Halfords.

my 2p. Second the n+1 option, when the time is right.  Carrera bikes tend to be on the heavy side - think the Parva is 13.5kg (med frame?); so with 1.5kg of water in summer, & saddle pack with extra kit, you may be knocking on 16kg + rider.   Having said that I don't tend to stress too much about weight, particularly since I'm not the lightest myself these days either.  Drop bars are great for multi hand positions on longer rides, though the flat bars can be could for 'working' those hills. In the fullness of time, a lighter bike, with drop bars, from Halfords - Boardman bikes can be a good option - gravel bikes would give a wider ranger of tyre sizes, mudguards no problem, & lowish gearing* 1:1 or better. (probably).     *maybe not as good as your hybrid (triple?).

OT Knowledge / Re: Mixer Tap regulations
« Last post by Wombat on Today at 06:21:53 pm »
Cudz, your stretching my knowledge of the regs to the very limit.

I would say that hot water might be potable or 'wholesome' under the terms of the regulations, but because mains tap water shouldn't be tepid as that would potentially be unpaletable there is a requirement to prevent mixing. See here for the fluid categories https://www.waterregsuk.co.uk/guidance/backflow-protection/backflow-protection/backflow-protection/what-is-a-fluid-cate/

With my water treatment hat on the other reason I wouldn't want to mix in hot water is the residual disinfectant (chlorine or chloramines) that are there to suppress any microbiological contamination after treatment that might make the water unsafe. Heating the water will reduce this residual and will therefore mean that the water once cooled could easily become a viable media for biological growth, see legionella's etc.

Er, chlorine?  Don't have any of that stuff in my water... Yes, I know most folk do, but I don't.

Based on your timezone you are either on a private supply and reliant on the short time and distance between the UV unit and the tap to prevent recolonisation or you are in one of the areas of the Netherlands that operates a chlorine free distribution system.

The former!  Borehole in the garden, and an effing great pump about 40 metres down it.  Brave assumption about the UV unit, though.  Its only had that for the last 7 years, just before we bought it.  Its a 1985 bungalow, and the initial residents are still alive and well after drinking the totally untreated water.  Its in a very rural area of Powys, mid-Wales.  Hopefully all the sheep wee has been filtered out of it by the time it reaches the level of the borehole intake.  Comically the UV unit was installed on the feed up to the tank in the roof space, not the downfeed.   Its lovely water, and we haven't died yet, or I think I'd have noticed.

Looks like it must have gone down on its last owner.  Oh, sorry, wrong thread.

I don't know if I'm helping or just rewording what I've already written.
Both. You're adding more, but also just rewording can often be helpful.

I've sent a message about this to someone I know who recently converted to Judaism, but he hasn't replied yet. Not that I'd expect him to know, necessarily – he hasn't actually AFAIK undergone a formal conversion, just read a bit and started following various dietary and other Jewish rules. And it's just occurred to me ask someone else I know, who's an ordained Druid (I didn't know till earlier this year druids had ordination, but apparently they do; I think you even have to pass an exam!).

Is there something that is niggling at you about this? Something you're trying to wrap your head around?
Not really, just curiousity.

The last time I went to Southampton, a middle-aged man in camouflage gear, carrying a skull on the end of a stick, was arguing with the security staff in Asda.  The main road in is also terrifying, as it's been turned from four lanes into two but drivers still use it as if it were four lanes, forcing you into the gutter.

Ah, probably the chief exec of the local authority, then.  Civic Centre's just across the road.  Dunno about the roads, when I was made redundant from there in 2011, I lost my entry visa, so haven't been back.

It's a Eurofighter Typhoon.

Indeed. In fact it's a Tranche 1 aircraft which will leave service early next year, along with 29 others, and will be 'reduced to spares' (ie scrapped). That will leave just 107 Typhoons in service, along with around 47 F-35 Lightning 2.

That makes me feel very old!  Years ago, I was lucky enough to have a walk around the Tornado production line at BAe Warton, and it just seems bizarre that the Tornado's replacement is now starting to be phased out.

That reminds me of our physics teacher, who loved to go on about how German regulations were so much more advanced (this was early 80s, so not a Brexit thing) once expanding this into plumbing (not part of the physics syllabus!). He definitely had a rant about header tanks but I can't remember precisely what. I think they might be banned in Germany?
My chap cannot understand why our taps in the UK are so weird (and why we don't have washing machines in the bathroom but in the kitchen, which is another topic).

They always have mixer taps and think two separate taps is bonkers.

I have seen occasional separate taps in Germany and they usually have a "hot" and "cold" text on them, so they are quaint English design ones.
