I saw a Heron with funny markings on the Somerset levels. It popped out of a drainage ditch as I went by, it was very close.
Mrs V. is a bit of a bird spotter and after looking at some pictures I am convinced it was a Crane

Jealous!
MrsC and I are members of the South Somerset RSPB local group. We've been aware of the crane project for a couple of years, but we've not actually seen one in the wild yet.
