Title: The comet
Post by: PaulR on 11 July, 2020, 12:24:56 pm
I stayed up late last night to see this rather splendit comet, shot with a 10mm lens.  I also took some photos with a 200mm lens but the tractor wouldn't fit.

It was looking splendid last night, visible to the eye and once our local lights went off at 01:00 it was fab!

It disappeared into the sky around 03:50 when the background got too light to see it anymore.

Very nice PaulR.

I thought this one on Twitter was excellent too:

That was fun!

Very difficult focussing with the longer lens.

I may edit them tomorrow... or even go out And take more!

PS thanks for merging the threads, I was too excited to check for the existence of one already!  ;D

I took this hand held pic very late on Monday (technically Tuesday), but we've had full cloud every night since then.

You don't HAVE to go to the sticks, you need a clear low northern horizon, preferably without extraneous light.

David's picture was at 2.03 BST from home.

Hi, mine were taken between midnight and 1am.

Well worth a look and reasonably high up in the sky as you can see. The final image, with the plough, is 24mm equivalent focal length.

I am settling down on a north-facing garden bench with a glass of wine and a pair of 11x80 binoculars (1986 Halley era kit). Sun has just left the clouds.

Jan and I drove out to Paglesham, which is reasonably free of light pollution, but we didn't see any comets. There was a bank of cloud stretching across the horizon between NW and N, which I think scuppered us.

Edit: mistaking all the pictures of sunrise for sunset, and therefore looking in the wrong direction at the wrong time of day didn't help as much as you might have expected.

Keep trying, it is a sight worth committing effort to see.

I can't find any information as to how long it will be visible for, but I guess that is because it it a comet, and not a Tory Party YouTub.e

No pictures but I toddled up the mound behind the house and peered into the light pollution over Southend. Couldn't see anything with the naked eye but my trusty Swift Audubon 8.5x44 bins picked it up easily. Great sight.

It's past its peak brightness now where it was easily visible to a dark adapted eye so I now struggle to see it without bins - it's not helped by our neighbour's teenage daughter leaving all their house lights on overnight whilst they are away at the moment!

For those in Essex, might be worth another go on Sunday evening/Monday Morning, currently showing clear sky predicted for 01:00 which coincides with the street lights going off which will help!

Pop your location in here for an indicator of viewing conditions.

I made the effort to see this last night with Mrs PC. Clouds thwarted us but even so Mrs PC thought it was a romantic walk because it reminded her of when we were courting in the late 70s I'd point out various stars, constellations and planets.

I can remember staying up late to catch a glimpse of Comet West in '76 (I had to look up when it was), I've seen maybe 2 naked eye comets (just) since then.

This could be my last effort at this comet, as it seems to be fading now as it gets closer to us, and further from the sun.  Its thin blue ion tail is amazingly long now.

I went to the top of Blackstone Edge on the border above Rochdale for about 11pm.  There were a dozen or so enthusu1asts dotted around with varying degrees of kit.  So you may imagine that I was childishly pleased to use a basic knowledge of astronomy, as opposed to photography, to be the one to find the comet for them!  I used fairly low-powered field glasses (8 x, I think)  but by 11.30 I was able to pick it out with the naked eye.  It was a thrill, compounded by the knowledge that it's only every 7000 years or so.  That makes it three times as reticent as Hale Bopp, which was a terrific show-off in 1996-7 - you could practically see that one without going out of the house.

One of the rare compensations of age is that as a child I saw the comet Arend-Roland in 1957.  That really was spooky to an impressionable mind.  That one won't come back.

As I came down from the mountain I was able to ascertain that it's possible to see the comet from much lower down but I expect that that is if you know exactly where it is beforehand!

Am I right in thinking that a lot of the excellent images on here are dependent on modern camera technology and that the comet itself appears far less distinct to the eye or in glasses?

It is certainly less bright than it appears on photos, but when I saw it at the beginning of the week it was clearly visible by eye.

Saw it last night from Rodborough Common (first clear night for ages). Became visible from about 10.30pm. Whilst the common has a surprisingly dark sky, position of the comet is unfortunate as it is in the last glow from sunset, so not as clear as it might otherwise have been. But still definitely visible by eye, even if not as bright as the photos show.

Saturday night's effort, since the clouds had miraculously cleared by midnight.

It was just visible with the naked eye, but my 7x50s picked it out well.  Still only taken from the bedroom window, and not anywhere super dark (other than being a few miles south of the city).

Third attempt this morning and bingo!

Mrs PC looked out the window to see if we had clear skies when she got up for the loo at just after midnight and because we did woke me up. My eyes are still not great post op with glasses but it was easily found as a naked eye object with a tail approx. 4°

I caught it on film but not sure how good that is until I download and process the image later today.

Extra bonus was a fireball (superbright meteor)  :-\
