OK, why is't my 'current' GPX file downloading any more???
« on: 29 January, 2010, 10:03:10 am »
...and I was getting on so well with my Oregon 300.

I come in from the ride, plug it in to the Mac, open 'Ascent' (great software BTW), Import the GPX file called 'Current' and there is my track that I've just done :) It means I don't have to save the track each time, I just reset it before I start the next ride. Easy.

Anyway, the last few days it won't import anything from that file (although there is clearly something in it as it's 48k long). Instead I have to save the Track (thus giving it a different name than 'current') and then it will pick up that saved file. It used to work, it doesn't now, I haven't done any updates or changed any settings... help!

What do you see on the disk when you browse into the folders (i.e. look into the garmin disk drive once it appears)?

Is it still the file "Current.gpx" inside the "Current" folder, as before?

If so, you could post the text content of it somewhere?  And have you done anything recently like adding another waypoint with a funny name?

(I've got a 200, so can compare it to mine)

Yeah, it's still 'current' within the current folder.

I have added a few waypoints recently but I doubt they're to blame - but I don't need them any more so shall delete them anyway.

I can work around it by saving the track but it's a bit annoying having to remember to do it - and then to delete the saved track.

Sounds odd. Well it's not that the track is 'full' - 48K only sounds like 400 points or so.  Even if it were full, it should automatically 'wrap' losing old points and retaining new ones.

I recommend http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Tracks for a FAQ-style rundown on how the Oregon handles tracks - may be some hint there.

Try copying the file elsewhere and opening it in a text editor.  If you can do that, try opening the copy in Ascent.

(If you can see and copy the file manually, but it still won't open in Ascent, then that would imply something odd in the content of it.  If you can't open it as text, implies something odd with the mounted drive)

If it opens as text ok, could you post the content?  Or at least the first 10k of it so you can get it in a post?

Unfortunately I cleared the current tracklog when saving today's track in order to download it to Ascent so I'll have to wait till I go out with it again tomorrow. However I've taken a look at 'Current' now, all 16k of it, and it seems to include all my POIs - is that normal?

I wanted to post what it says but it won't let me!

It should include all your waypoints in addition to the current track, yes.  That seems to be normal, though I agree it seems a strange decision.

(that was why I was asking about recent changes in waypoints before)

So... I removed all but one of my Waypoints (just kept 'Home' in case I forget where I live).

Now it's working as normal.

Odd, that.

Fair enough, problem gone.   :) :-\

If you still have a copy of the gpx which didn't load properly, you could send it to the makers of Ascent.  They might appreciate it.
