What to grow - absent from garden for 6 summer weeks
« on: 24 November, 2010, 09:00:28 pm »
The question's been put to me: if I'm away from six weeks next year (Jul/Aug), what can be grown in the veg patch next year that might survive total inattention?

I'm thinking of loads of parsnips, onions and other root crops. Any other suggestions?

Yes, most kinds of root crops. Also cabbage and broccoli (though some butterflies might have a feast). Purple sprouting broccoli will stand a lot of inattention but make sure it'll not ripen whilst you're away as it'll bolt to seed very fast if you don't pick the ripe shoots very regularly. Outdoor toamtoes if someone can water them occasionally.

Not forgetting cereals, hay, etc.
