Not really a grumble, more like a wail of horror: the missus's brand-new Kenwood mixer, a £650 present from the Inlaw Paw, crept off the worktop while her back was turned and crashed onto the tiled floor.

All due credit, the casing didn't crack, in fact nothing broke and it still works, almost; but the top no longer snugs all the way down into the latch and is liable to swing up under load. It'd make you weep.

Come Tuesday we'll be onto the service centre, but we're expecting a biggish bill. OTOH a mixer that costly shouldn't creep off a dead level surface, should it?

You know that cardinal sin of using tabs and spaces to align things in a word processor?

I've been handed a text file with the equivalent of that. 1500 lines of text that uses space and tab-significant formatting, with spaces, tabs and line breaks used incorrectly.

Text file is easy - just run it through sed and you should be fine. Or be a bit smarter and work out exactly how much indent is represented by each whitespace character and translate to a common format.

Then send it back and get them to redo it.

That same magic recipe can then be reused many times.

Some years ago I was on a bus in that there London. The bus conductor came up and pointed the object I had hanging around my neck and said - that is a mighty fine Mjölnir you got there - and asked where I got it from. I think I managed to explain it to him, in not too rude way, because I was rather shocked that he managed to pronounced Mjölnir in such a fluent way. Even Danes fall over it now and again.

Oh balls - I was meant to have done a similar job last week before I buggered off for Easter, but pain-in-the-arse last-minute requests meant it totally slipped my mind. Just one more delight that will await me Monday morning...

Homebase: I like the look of your soapdish, which is why I bought it. However, the screws supplied are made of cheese and had stupidly shallow cross heads so I had to improvise. And the dish itself didn't have drain holes and is rather small.

At least they bothered to send you a message. My recent experience of Freecycle and the like has been that people just don't show up, never to be heard from again. I've given up trying to offer stuff.
