These ODIs are not leaving us in suspense until the last moment, or generally the last hour. Although fingers-crossed the Dutch all-comers late rally might make today's match interesting.

Quite right. I once criticised Graeme Hick persistently as he never looked in touch whilst accumulating 68*. Finally, after three elegant fours in one over, I was forced to admit that he was batting quite well.

It looked like it was going to be an exciting finish. So much so that I gave up pretending to work in my study and moved to the living to pretend to work in front of the TV screen. I wish I hadn't. Even an English batting collapse wouldn't shed wheels so fast. I'm sorry. It's all my fault. If I'd stayed put we might have had an exciting finish.

Afghanistan have made a good start. Will send England deservedly to the basement if they win. I was asked by a fellow student's son what I thought of the England team. I said that we had picked a team to win a world cup in English conditions. However that might have been excessive praise.

I think 4 more years of T20 and all the T20 leagues that have sprung up have taught bowlers how to deal with out-of-the-blocks slogging - its a tactic that worked in its day and other teams have moved on.

South Africa v Bangladesh is so not close that Cricinfo is resorting to a 'who is the most handsome cricketer at the world cup message contest'. At least Pakistan v Afghanistan was a close call, which means that Pakistan have featured in both close matches of the 22 1/2 so far.

With Australia looking likely to squash the Netherlands today a clear top 4 is emerging - India, New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia. Barring some dramatic turnaround in form, it seems likely that this will be the semi-finalists. Not about to rush down to Ladbrokes to place a bet as I think the odds won't be great.

I don't know whether Buttler's response is reported correctly or if his "determination to remain captain" is journo-speak but if he actually did say that unprompted then, where is self-respect (I don't mean self-regard)? He's had an awful series, as have almost all of them. He could at least offer to go and then see if the board try and persuade him to stay. Does he have a say in who plays? What the Aussies, NZ, India and SA do is work out who their best players are and pick them for all types of cricket (or so it seems to me, at least). It seems to work for them.

My sense of irony hints that India will slip up against England in the next game. It won't matter as to get to the semis we need one out of South Africa and New Zealand to lose all their remaining fixtures, Australia to fail to win 2 out 4 (with Afghanistan and Bangladesh as thier last two matches) and none of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, or Afghanistan to have a good late run. It's mathematically possible but so unlikely that even Marsh and Lillee wouldn't have taken the odds (cf Headingly 1981).

Pretty comprehensive analysis, CET, though you neglected to factor in phases of the moon, Trump's court case, impending by-election and the Hollywood actors' strike. My money would be on a betting fix!
