I see over on Velovision (http://www.velovision.co.uk/cgi-bin/show_comments.pl?storynum=948) that Sam Wittingham has broken his own world record at Battle Mountain. :D
82.33mph! :o
-
Is there a 'brown trousers' smiley?
Congrats to Sam, though. Respect.
-
;D beat you by 7 minutes ;)

Well, if you put it in a thread about a competition in Suffolk you can't blame me for missing it! ;)

;D
What I want to know is did our man over there get any spy pic's of the new carbon Bacchetta John Schlitter was riding.
There are some about but the photographers have been sworn to secrecy and none are on the net yet.
I've already PM'd him to ask ;D
Rich.

lol, I love a comment on there about our very own Mayor.
Dave Larrington performs his course sweep duty of the 5 mile course in his rental Corvette. This of course takes him less than 2 minutes. (http://www.recumbents.com/wisil/whpsc2008/images/Thursday/IMG_1014.jpg)

Doesn't look as though he's the slightest bit interested in your Carbon bike Rich.
Too busy posing (http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/uprightmike/Battle%20Monday%20Monday/?action=view¤t=MonDaveLarringtonbehindthewheelofhi.jpg) up and down the highway trying to impress Tanya by the look of things ;D
-
I'm impressed when someone does over 60mph on the flat, but doing over 80mph! (http://jakal.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/~timo/smilies/blink.gif)
The Mayor was obviously making used of the closed road, and getting maximum nuttiness out of his rented wheels, but still probably didn't manage to do more than double the pedal powered people!

Fastest "official" run was 180.88 mph over the 200m on Friday night, but I think Saturday morning was slightly faster - possibly a 182 or 183. Amazingly I managed to get away with being stopped for speeding four times, due to my good looks, great personal charm and outrageous accent ;D
Apologies for the lateitude, but I have been away from teh Intarwebs for most of the trip and have been back in Blighty but three hours. And now I'm going to the offy...

John was only there for a day. He had three bikes strapped to the back of his motorcar, but they just looked like ordinary big-wheeled Bacchetti to me, so I didn't bother snapping 'em. He may have had Interesting Stuffs concealed inside said motorcar, but I didn't look.
-
Oh well better luck next time ;D
*Goes back to searching photo sites*
Quote from John on the Bacchetta forum,
"Just happen to be going by Battle Mountain today and thought what the heck I'll stop in and see how the speed runs are going. Sam had gone over 80mph this morning and things looked god for the next day. Sam thought it might be tough to do a good run tonight after that fast one this morning.
I decided to see if there was a room and got the last one, then took the new carbon out for a 20 mile ride and came back and waited to go out to the race course with Garrie Hill. We set up the timing gates for the 200mm and waited. First session went good with Sam leading off the second group of racers. Weather was prefect 0 wind Sam Whittington (Team Bacchetta) came flying though the 200 meters at 82.39 mph a new world record WOW!.
Now that was a perfect finish to good day to stop in on Battle Mountain. Sam says he has been riding the heck out of his Corsa S/S training for B - mountian. He was out for warm down ride when I pulled into town".
Rich.

then took the new carbon out for a 20 mile ride
Aha. I did see this bike, but apart from the colour (not shiny naked carbon) it was pretty much indistinguishable from yours.
-
Mind you it wouldn't help me get up hills any quicker, I'm probably over the weight limit for it as well ::-)
(back to dreaming/drooling)
Rich.

Seems that Mike Mowett got a pic of said Bacchetta: Clicky (http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f152/uprightmike/Battle%20Mountain%20Thursday/?action=view¤t=ThursarrivalofJohnSchlitterandhisBa.jpg)

'Tis the one in the middle with 700c wheels.
Still not found any better shots of it yet though.

Bump!
OK, so the 2009 event doesn't get properly under way until the 14th, but who knows what the state of the InterTubes will be in rural Leftpondia, plus I'm starting the trip tomorrow. The course has just been resurfaced (they finished yesterday!) so if there aren't at least three new records it'll be because the Wind Demons don't like us.
No Corvette this time chiz :(
-
Never mind - I hear those Greyhound busses go pretty fast...
-
Just arrived, having driven along the course on the way into town. You could roll pastry on it, if you didn't mind a bit of dust in your pie ;D

Interview in the latest C+ (p. 31).
PS I don't quite agree with the design principles though.

Care to summarise, for those of us who are five thousand miles from the nearest copy of C+?
Qualifiers in the morning, fist record runs tomorrow night. Watch this VVV space...

...and those of us who don't want to buy a copy just to read an article of which I have no idea what it's on about.
-
Just through with qualibobs - Sam Whittingham fastest @ 66.6 mph (the Velocity of the Beast) with a 2.5 mile run-up. First full-course runs in about eight hours time...
Edit: Strong wind, heavy rain, pitch waterlogged, match abandoned for today.
Bah!

Well it is about the bike and him. ;D
The bike bit I remember well because they said that they didn't use any fluid mechanics or modelling to design it; which, in my experience, is rather counter intuitive as fluid mechanics is not an art, at least not in the classical sense of the term, but a rather diffciult mathematical problem to solve. So good guess work, but is it optimal?
I will try and do a better summary (of the rest) latter on tonight.

We've had SCIENCE versus Art in the past, with the likes of Matt Weaver and the Blueyonder team, and so far the bike designed by the sculptor has always come out ahead ;D

Ta muchly.
Too windy for a record run this morning chiz, but Yannick Lutz in the Altair II got over 70 mph at his first attempt; Tanya Markham and Barclay Henry went over 60. More stuff later, stuff fans.
-
New record! Sam Whittingham did 82.43 tonight and reckons there's more to come, particularly if the weather improves. Which it's supposed to.
Barbara Buatois exceeded the existing women's record by almost 3 mph, but was prevented from claiming it due to too high a wind speed chiz; she was first down the course this evening and the only person to have an illegal wind. Steps are being taken to allow her to run later from tomorrow.
Freddy Markham did a > 75 mph run, Yannick Lutz was > 70, Jason Erickson a new PB with a 67 and Eric Ware likewise with a 65.
-
New arm-powered record! Greg Westlake in the Avos Arrow; 37.8 mph.
Machine currently having its gearing raised...
-
New women's record: 72.5 mph for Barbara Buatois in the Varna Diablo 3. Nearly 6 mph improvement over the previous mark. Hurrah!
Greg Westlake punctured when running at over 48 mph with more than a mile to go before the timed section. Bah!

That's an absolute shattering of the record.
And Greg is going to have to get quicker before a blowout than that if he wants Sam's record of fastest crash. Actually having said that did he crash or manage to control it? Top bike skills if he managed to slow it down whilst upright.

I now see that Greg rides a trike, so that would have reduced the chances of him scuffing the new surface.

He came close to running off the road, but kept it rubber-side down and on the black stuff. Just back from this morning's runs and late breakfast; IIRC he did 42.5 at the second attempt, after his earlier 41 and some change was thwarted by the wind.
18 year old Jay Henry got over 60 for the first time in spite of crashing this time yesterday. More updates (hopefully) after tonight's session.
-
Sam's reporting on his blog that Greg clocked 41.48mph through the trap for the world record.
-
Soz, finger trouble on my part. Or something. Anyway, Greg had another two goes in the evening and bumped it up to 42.3 on the second. Of them. He sat things out this morning, but will be out again tonight. If I get my act together sufficiently I may be able to get a photo of the machine in toto. Last night I tried to get action photos of the fast boys about 750m from the timers, netting five pictures of empty road and sagebrush. Bugger!
World+dog currently doing 1/8 mile drag races or fettling.

Fuck me, that was a Bit Special :o
Only the Cal Poly bike Atlas let the side down - transmission problems stopped them in both attempts. In chronological order:
Rob Hitchcock / Kyle Edge: 60.66 mph. He's gone faster, but he's a bit out of practice at the moment.
Ron Layman / Primal 2: 66.60 mph. First time over 65 for Ron.
Greg Westlake / Avos Arrow: 43.49 mph. Yet another world record!
Sam Whittingham / Varna Tempest: 82.82 mph. Yet another world record!
Yannick Lutz / Altair II: 73.07 mph. Personal best.
Eric Ware / Wedge: 71.07 mph. First time over 70 for Eric.
Barbara Buatois / Varna Diablo 3: 75.46 mph. Yet another world record, outright European record, first woman over 75 mph, fourth fastest rider evvah after Sam, Matt Weaver and Fast Freddy Markham. $DEITY alone knows how she does it coz there's not much of her
Photos on the flickr site in due course.
-
Bit anti-climactic tonight - the wind was stronger than earlier in the week and an error converting times to speeds produced results that had everyone going "no, that's not right" instead of dancing in the street. Once the speeds were recomputed, Sam turned in yet another 80+ run, with a moth as an unwelcome passenger in the Diablo, and Barbara did a 73.2.
And Greg did the full course, resulting in yet another edging up of the record, to 43.67 mph. It's over for another year and I'm going to bed.
-
Thanks for the updates and photos.
I'm agog at the speeds and the machines involved.
