Title: The Rocky Road to Dublin - Ireland's Super-Randonneé 600 route
Post by: The LongRider on 07 April, 2021, 05:36:51 pm
The ACP have accepted Ireland's first SR600 route. Once travel opens up again The Rocky Road to Dublin will be available to ride from Killarney, Co. Kerry to the city centre of Dublin finishing at the former House of Parliament. Some of Ireland's best Audaxers have sought out the nastiest climbs across nine counties.

More information is available on the Audax Ireland website. https://www.audaxireland.org/audax/awards-medals/super-randonee-600/

I'm the organiser and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Wow - that looks a really cool idea. (Goodness knows when travel WILL open up.)

This is the first 1-way SR600 I've seen. I like the idea you could round off your trip with some lazy touristy time in Dublin, then pootle home (possibly after dumping your bike at the post office!).

Is it hilly?

Just the tiniest bit of climbing.  ;D There are plenty of other hills that we could have included... There are some hills that you'll be very glad you're descending rather than ascending. The surfaces get better as you travel towards Dublin, some roads even have a central white line.

Nice, I'm sure the gap of dunloe was easy the 2 times I've been over it, though both times included horsepower...

Is it straightforward to get from Dublin to the start with a bike on the train?

I didn't see any mention of where rooms are available on the . Presumably there will be pubs/inns that operate as bed and breakfast in many places not just the make towns?

There are several trains to Killarney with a change at Mallow www.irishrail.ie There are also bus services. Trains do take bicycles but you'll have to reserve a spot.

This is the most self-sufficient of all audax rides. No accommodation is provided by the organiser. You will have to source your own sleeping places en route. I'd recommend bringing a bivvy bag. The route does go through several towns and there are hotels and B&Bs available. Check Airbnb options as well. There are two youth hostels on the route at Ballymacarbery and Laragh.

Due to the demanding nature of the route, it's very hard to plan your stops. You may intend to ride 240km on the first day but find that you're too fatigued by 200km.

www.refill.ie is a useful site for available water stops.

Wow, that looks amazing, on my shortlist. Good to see the Blackwater Tavern there after 42km, my favourite local shop in Ireland, they'll make you a cup of tea and bring it out front if you ask nicely.

Probably worth noting that Killarney is only 250km/300km from Rosslare (ferry to Wales) / Dublin. A gentle 2-day pootle in either case.
(and Killarney is the tourist capital of the SW, plenty of accommodation.)

EDIT: I've just remembered that my last trip down that way, I flew home Shannon-Gatwick! Shannon was quite an experience ...
