I take it this refers to Murray/Wawrinka.

Wawrinka has always given Murray problems, and Murray's form hasn't been there since Wimbledon. I'm not particularly surprised by this result.

A few months ago there was talk about the no. 1 ranking.

Look here: http://live-tennis.eu/forecast_atp_ranking

Now Murray's 3rd spot and under pressure from Ferrer in 4th. How quickly things turn around.

If you don't defend ranking points, that's what happens. Murray used to be in the top 4 on the back of quite a few 'minor' tournaments won. Then he was second on the back of two Grand Slams, giving him 4,000.

He's won fewer minor ones this year as he's been injured/resting. You need to get to Semis or Finals of majors - he's got 360 for the US Open, as against 2,000 last year. Looks like he got 750 for the Olympics too. So that's 2,000 dropped in a few weeks.

He's got to beat him to win, in all probability, so does it matter at what point it happens?

Apparently John Lloyd criticised Murray for not doing enough to big-up the LTA. Perhaps that has something to do with the LTA having absolutely nothing to do with his rise to prominence - nor with Laura Robson, Kyle Edmunds, Joanne Konta, Heather Watson etc. etc.  All relied on parents to fund their development.  And today Murraty is saying that talking to the LTA is a waste of time, and that it's concerning that there are no juniors coming up. He also observed that when he went to the National Tennis Centre on Tues and Weds before the Davis Cup tie to get some hitting in, there were NO players using it - neither gym nor courts.

As long as UK LTA affiliated tennis clubs (there are exceptions of course, one being our local centre at Halton) allow adult members to throw juniors off court at will (even if those juniors are playing a competition round - yes it happens) then the LTA will remain a waste of space and we will languish at the bottom of the tennis league tables if not for the perseverance and sacrifice of competitive parents.

Rant over  :)

I read that also

Quote
Murray said one of his main frustrations was a lack of players to practise with whenever he is in the UK.
After returning from the Shanghai Masters in October, Murray said he arrived at the National Training Centre in London to find no other players present.
"I was there on a Monday at about 3pm and then on Tuesday, at the same time," he said.
"There was not one person using any of the indoor courts and not one person in the gym. I took photos of it because the place cost like £40m and there are no people."

Unfortunately the Murray anomaly, and the Davis Cup win, may give the impression we are a good Tennis-playing nation when we really aren't.

Whenever I go abroad I see people playing tennis on public courts.  I can honestly say I don't see anyone, at all, all year, using public courts around here... apart from Wimbledon fortnight, when everyone digs out the tennis bats, heads down the local Rec' and discovers they are full.

We have 2 men in the top 100 (#2 & #45) and 6 in the top 200.

France have 7 in the top 50.

Spain have 15 in the top 100

The big shock for me is Germany who also seem to have no depth in men's tennis right now.  USA, given the participation levels I saw when I was living there, aren't doing so well in the men's rankings.

However British Tennis would simply fall off a cliff if Murray wasn't around, there's no depth, no up-and-coming star and, from what Murray says about the LTA facilities.. not much chance of it changing.

Have they not heard about Dave Brailsford?

Is the LTA one of those awful British "Empire era" societies?  Too genteel, where trying to win is seen as "bad form old chap"?

Quote
LTA chief Downey said the coverage created by Britain's successful weekend in Belgium should help "encourage participation".

I noticed when I took the dog to the park the other morning tha both courts were in use. IKBAAT but it looked to me as though the server I watched was reasonably proficient.

SBC did refurbish the outside courts to a high standard fairly recently. There are also outdoor (concrete) table tennis tables. I have very rarely seen anyone use those, and never have I seen anyone use the outdoor chess board with its two very uncomfortable-looking concrete chairs!

Table tennis and it's duller big brother are both very affected by the weather. I would think this means southern Europe gets a lot more use from outdoor courts than us.

( Indoor tennis is scarily expensive everywhere that I have looked - luckily Ping-Pong is cheap as chips! )

And apparently Radio 4 (I'm assuming the Today programme) brought up the "yes, but is Konta really British as she was born to Hungarians in Australia" discussion.  ::-)

I know she came here a lot younger, but Laura Robson was born in Australia, to Australian parents.

And why do we (well, I - possibly I don't listen to the right programmes!) never hear the same discussion when related to Rugby and the likes of the Vunipola's - one a Kiwi and one and Australian originally, and Marlon Yarde, from St Lucia.  Tho' for balance we do get the "is Mo Farah really British" one from time to time.

The conversation came up a fair bit when Trott and Pieterson played in the England cricket team.

I don't really care. In a modern small world with opportunities to travel and live in a different country more than ever before then if I can choose to move somewhere and take up nationality elsewhere (I haven't but I could), then why can't a sports person if they so chose?

It's not all that different to choosing which Premiership football team you would like to play for.

A good day for Brit tennis - wins for Naomi and Liam Brady, plus Kyle Edmunds (who beat a fellow Bit in Dan Evans, the first all Brit Challenger final in more than 10 years). Naomi Brady will be into the top 100, Edmunds rises to 85.  And AFAIK only Liam Broady takes LTA money/training. And Katy Swan didn't do too badly last week - she trains in the US.

Meldonium

It increases blood supply and "increases the capacity for work", which is why so many endurance athletes take it, and why it has been banned.

Until Jan 1st it has been a "legal PED".

She earns over £30 million a year and employs people to tell her what drugs she can and can't take.  People at this level of sport don't go to Boots and read the labels themselves.

Note.  If she doesn't employ someone to tell her what drugs she can and can't take then she's a stingy fool.

I think there is a grey/gray area between drugs being <govt agency> approved, and being actually _illegal_ to take/administer. This no doubt varies between country.

It sounds like athletes have been using this stuff for 10 years, without anyone worrying, so IMHO it's unlikely they've been breaking laws. If it's been on WADA's "watch list" (not the banned list), that suggest that THEY don't think it's widely  illegal.
(although it still might be in certain countries!)

Worryingly the head of the Russian Tennis Federation says that she will be at the Rio  Olympiad.
Like to bet on that ?

From the BBC news link, its clear that several athletes have had bans of just a few months - plenty of time for Rio!
No doubt she is crossing her fingers, buying heather, etc etc ...

Yup money talks .
It's that dichotomy of opinion that says all pro cyclists are off their heads with dope and all other sports are cleanwhich really annoys me.
Cycling, and now athletics,  have been the convenient scapegoats that has allowed other sports to convince themselves that it isn't half as bad on their side of the fence , therefore they don't need to take any action that will frighten off the sponsors.

She has been tested,  caught, and the result publicised. This is already a pretty big deal; let's wait for the sentence before we criticise the relevant authorities.

Maria is (AFAIK) by far the biggest name to fail a test in tennis (and possibly in the whole world of womens sport).  So it will be really interesting to see the outcome; this may be a watershed in drug enforcement outside the  strength/speed/endurance sports.

You would think she'd have a full time nutritionist/medic/someone on her books responsible for watching everything like a hawk.

A lot has been made about the use of the drug by MS over the last few years, but in sense given that it wasn't banned - this is all 'irrelevant'.

Turning into an expensive 'letter shoved under a magazine'...

The Russian said she had taken meldonium, a heart medicine which improves blood flow, for a decade following various health problems including regular sicknesses, early signs of diabetes and “irregular” results from echocardiography exams. “I was first given the substance back in 2006. I had several health issues going on at the time,” she said.

This would be the 2006 when she won the US Open and three other Tier I tournaments, reached the semi-finals of two other Grand Slams, and accrued sufficient points that she was WTA No 1 in January 2007?  Those health problems must have been really holding her back.  ::-)

I don't get the opprobrium. There isn't a professional sportsperson (nor many top flight amateurs either I'd wager) that doesn't take anything not banned if they think it will help their performance. (Look at triathletes and their prophylactic doses of Ibuprofen). And when it goes on the banned list they stop, mostly. Her organisation screwed up, but she has made no defence other than to say she made a mistake in continuing to take the now-banned substance, and she's blamed no-one else publicly.

Rafael Nadal has denied he has ever used a banned substance to get an edge or to speed up recovery from injury

...but it's quite likely he was using the same drug as Sharapova for the last 10 years but stopped when it became banned in January.

If EPO wasn't banned I think it's fair to assume they'd all be using it.

The medal ceremonies reached a crescendo of sickliness in the Nadal/Federer era.  Cringeworthy niceness - it did appear reasonably genuine between them but one can never be sure.

I sometimes wonder if they'd have done the mutual backslapping/psychophancy thing in the 80s how McEnroe, Connors and Lendl would have approached this as they seemed to rather openly hate one another.  :-D

It's also worth noting Murray exited the US open at the round of 16. Federer was a finalist and Djokovic the champion. So they're both defending a lot of points from that. I think it will be hard for Federer to get to the final again.

Exactly.  While the Fed and Nadal can still cut it near the top they aren't, imo, what they used to be.  The classic- big four was (for me) when Nadal and Fed were at their peak and Murray and Djoko were knocking heavily at the door.

Whilst it might still be them four in the top four currently, I can't really see either Fed or Nadal ever winning a slam event again (I hope Nadal does, but I can't see it).  Really now it's the big one - Djokovic is clearly a class above all, with Murray a class above all - except that Djokovic chap - grr.  Nadal and Fed are more or less also rans for me these days.  I'm not sure why Federer bothers now but I guess he still enjoys it :)

[mens doubles, I presume!]
i was enjoying that, but finally fell asleep about 3 games into the 3rd set. Looked like the Frenchies were finally getting on top of us  :-\

It's an interesting game to watch. Same - well almost - rules, yet totally different game. I still haven't got used to the effects of the two-bounce rule; I suspect on a surface like grass (more attacking game, shorter points) it would be more like "regular" tennis, and perhaps better balanced. And that may only apply for doubles - I haven't watched any singles properly yet.

Volleying seemed almost futile.

Despite not having got my eye in, I was enjoying the match!

I'm not sure Andy M has much of a chance of top spot this year, but he does have a chance.

I'd written it off as a possibility after a slightly disappointing US Open but Djokovic has been well off the form we've been used to, and he does seem to be vulnerable.

Murray is playing Vienna next week, potentially gaining another 500 points. Djokovic is not; if Murray wins in Vienna then he would go into the Paris Masters with only a 415 point deficit in the ATP Race with 1000 points for the winner, so that lead could be overturned by the time we come to the end of season tournament. Or it could open up again.

Title: Re: The tennis...

Do you folks actually care about the rankings? I know it's important to the players lower down, as it gets you into bigger tournaments and/or gets you an easier draw*.

But I'm really not bothered if my favourite player is ranked 3rd or 1st; tournament wins and Slams are the only interest.

Each to his own of course - I'm just asking :)

*(and OK, the top players also get a slightly easier draw, as I'm sure someone will point out!)
Title: Re: The tennis...
Post by: simonp on 17 October, 2016, 04:32:30 pm
From the point of view of the draw, I don't think it makes any difference if you're 1 or 2. Unless 1 is always the same half of the draw, which might affect scheduling. I'm not sure if that's the case.

However, I think being world no. 1 is a big thing, myself. It has been slightly devalued in the women's game in the past when a world no.1 existed who had at the time never won a GS event. I'm not sure if that's ever happened in the men's game.

Murray's potential bucket list:

 - Wimbledon - ding, ding
 - Flushing Meadows - ding
 - Davis Cup - ding
 - Olympic Gold - ding, ding
 - Roland Garros - eeeh uuuh
 - Melbourne - eeeh uuuh
 - World no. 1 - eeeh uuuh
 - GOAT - eeeh uuuh
 - $$$$$ - ding ding ding ding

Looking at that list, Murray should throw everything at the AO and FO next year.
Title: Re: The tennis...

It matters if you are 2nd or 3rd. Third gives you a tougher draw.

Winning tournaments & slams is certainly more important than being No. 1, but given Murray has won 3 Slams, 2 Olympic gold medals, the Davis Cup and 13 Masters 1000 events it would be something else to add to his list of achievements rather than the only thing he's managed.

However, I think being world no. 1 is a big thing, myself. It has been slightly devalued in the women's game in the past when a world no.1 existed who had at the time never won a GS event. I'm not sure if that's ever happened in the men's game.

Marcelo Ríos got to No. 1 without winning a Grand Slam.

A Djokovic win vs Murray in the final would leave the gap at 815 points.

The reverse result, 15 points (still in Djokovic's favour).

ATP finals were won by Djokovic last year, up to 1500 points to win there.

He only has to if Djokovic makes the final, surely?

The reason Andy is currently no. 1 is that Djokovic has been losing before the final in several tournaments.

I don't know the detail, but apparently losing a group match deducts 200 points from the maximum you can earn.

Andy's doing ok. That first set today went to a tiebreak, and the other ones were fine. He keeps his head together now when things are going the other way and keeps going until he wins.

From the rules:

ATP World Tour Finals 1,500 for undefeated Champion (200 for each round robin match win, plus 400 for a semi-final win, plus 500 for the final win)

Here is my understanding some of the ways it could play out.

IIRC Murray leads by 405 points as of now. If he loses on Friday and Djokovic wins tomorrow, and Cilic wins tonight, he will still lead by 205 points.

If they both then lose in the semi finals, Murray would still be no. 1. If Djokovic loses tomorrow and Murray wins, then Djokovic beats him in the final, Murray is no. 1 as Murray would have an insurmountable 605 point lead going into the final.

http://live-tennis.eu/ has the up to date points.

There is a complication to the calculation for the year-end ranking, which is the 275 Davis Cup final points for last year coming off on Nov 28th.

FYI

Johanna Konta was born in Sydney, Australia on 17 May 1991, the daughter of Hungarian parents Gábor, a hotel manager, and Gabriella, a dentist. Her parents had emigrated separately from Hungary and met in Australia. One of Konta's grandfathers, Tamás Kertész (1929—1989), played football for Ferencvárosi TC, won two international caps for Hungary in the 1950s and later coached the Ghana national team. Konta has an elder sister, Éva Emese, from her father's previous marriage.

Konta's childhood was spent in Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches, where she was introduced to tennis at an after-school programme at the age of eight. When she was 14, she began attending the Sanchez Casal academy in Barcelona, spending 15 months there in an attempt to further her development. While she was in Spain her parents moved to England.

It becomes increasingly difficult to figure out who to cheer for, and why we do.
Presumably we hoped she would lose against a British opponent when she was playing her youth tennis as an Australian.

I'm happy enough that, if she says she's British, and pays 40% tax, that she's British.

Johanna Konta: Injured

Surprised she isn't concussed after that fall - and it came a couple of games after she'd asked the umpire to check the dampness on the court.

She is very good, and seems to be developing a Murray-like ability to keep fighting back from behind. If she can beat Venus in the semi-final, I think she'll win the final, but Venus is playing well, and well, she's Venus.

So, it's 5-0 to Ms Muguruza in the second set. She needs her service game to win*.

And the male American member of the commentary team has only just stopped going on about how great Ms Williams is. When she lost the first set, he said that set had been hers to win, & she looked as if she'd come back.

She looks worn out. Can't keep up.

PS. Won it, so second set 6-0.

PPS. I wonder if Garbiñe Muguruza pronounces that z as if she's Venezuelan, Castilian or Basque. S, the, or funny s?

That's reminiscent of Graf's first Winbledon win in 1988. Graf was 7 - 5 and 2 - 0 down to Navratilova before suddenly deciding to play tennis. She then blew Navratilova away, winning 12 out of the next 13 games.

I think Venus had 2 set points (before SM had any), and was never really behind in the set - until the last 2 games. So it was a reasonable bit of punditry. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Novak out for the rest of 2017: http://novakdjokovic.com/en/news/media/novak-ends-2017-season-due-to-elbow-injury/ which surely just makes it easier for Federer to win another US Open. Top half of the men's draw seems set up for a Rafa vs. Federer semi final, while Čilić must be chuffed to bits to be in the bottom half of the draw with, erm, Tsonga and the Zverev brothers. Perhaps this is the time for Alex Zverev to shine, he's now won two Masters 1000 titles (beating Novak & Federer in the finals), although he has yet to make the quarter finals of a Slam.

I have no clue for the women's draw. Serena is absent, Halep, Kerber and Konta haven't made it past the first round. Sharapova, having beaten Halep, cannot face a seeded player until the 4th round, but is lacking time on court after only recently making her comeback from her ban. Muguruza hasn't gotten past the 2nd round of the US Open, but did win at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Masters a few weeks ago. Venus Williams has already reached two Grand Slam finals this year, will she win this for the third time, the other victories coming in 2000 and 2001 :o?

I read a great story at the weekend about grunting players:

apparently at a youth tournament, the spectators started shrieking during the points. Despite the players protesting to the umpire, the fans persisted; the players then stopped their noise, and everyone carried on harmoniously  ;D

Clive James had a theory that Jimmy Connors changed the timing of his grunt from "as the ball is hit" to "start of the stroke" one year, which proved very effective as confused opponents would try to hit the grunt instead of the ball.

That kind of tennis is dull. I had a friend there this afternoon and he said it really spoilt what he thought was going to be the fun of watching the men's semi finals.

It's an awful attritional contest just to see who is going to lose to Djokovic/Nadal. Big serving nonsense like that cannot compete with players who can actually play ground strokes.

Not sure what the answer is. Either tie-breaks at 6-6 in the fifth set or maybe at 12-12. Letting it go on like that and the players have little incentive to do anything in their non-service games.

I do agree with the bold.  (6 hours is too long for a spectator sport. I'm not surprised your mate didn't enjoy himself. Perhaps extra-time then penalties is the answer? No? ... )

But you're a bit harsh on these 2 players; I watched some of the first 3* sets, and they were really going for their shots. The rallies were good entertainment. And a nice mix of serve-volley in there, which is really what makes Wimmbly-don unique, so hoorah! Then again, perhaps set 5 wasn't at the same level. :/

*Luckily I chose to watch Le Tour finish and go to bed; I had no idea the tennis would be a 6-hour epic :O

One of them defeated Federer to get there. He can play ground strokes. Perhaps age has caught up with him though.

It is the wrong way to decide the match since it hands a huge advantage to their next round opponent. Final set tie break is perhaps the way to go. It would focus the mind on avoiding getting to that scenario.

I didn't see much of Isner v Anderson, but there was some good play/rallies in the earlier sets - no doubt Wimbledon will bring in a 5th set tie break.  Anderson did put out Federer, so I think who ever plays him in the final will not find it plain sailing.  Was impressed by Anderson's post match interview.  Some fantastic tennis in Djokovic/Nadal last night - good to see Djokovic is back.

Oo er.  Whether Serena wanted to receive the hand signals or not, her coach apparently admitted the gestures were 'coaching'.  Interestingly Kyrgios, earlier in US open, was supposedly given a 'pep talk' by the umpire himself.  So a clear protest then leave it and move on, yes,  but calling the umpire a 'liar' and a 'thief', was always likely to end badly.    As for whether a male player would have received the same level of penalty as Serena, or whther BJK is correct in her assessment..?  Maybe a soft warning 'repeat that and you will get a game penalty' may have been better for the match/occasion of the women's final.

The comments make better points than the article.

As for upbringings with a bit of difficulty, “Her Japanese grandfather was furious when he found out that her mother was romantically involved with a black man. As a result of the interracial relationship, her mother did not have contact with her family for over 10 years.”

There was a black player the other side of the net, who wasn’t on Serena's radar when she had her entitlement rant.

Serena is a bully.

She is using her position within the world and her sport to push what she sees as right and no one is allowed to stand in her way. She has been bullied in the past, without any doubt she has been victim of racial abuse and sexist comments. It is no excuse for her actions on Saturday which brought the sport into disrepute. Apparently we are all supposed to think Serena Williams is an angel who can do no wrong. Becoming a bully because you were bullied is the worst possible reaction to such treatment.

She was receiving coaching instructions. Her coach said that's exactly what he was doing and yet no-one is banning him from the players box (at least not yet). So what if she didn't see it? Saying everyone else does it is also no excuse - see drugs in cycling etc. - Apparently we no longer have to take responsibility for our own actions or those of the people around us because of our reputation and if we shout loud enough.

There are better ways to promote women's rights than shouting at someone when you are losing a sporting contest.

Title: Re: The tennis...
Post by: DuncanM on 10 September, 2018, 02:53:34 pm
It's clear that Serena has been on the end of a significant amount of discrimination over the years she has been in tennis (and before). As a woman and as a black person.
I believe that the announcement from Roland Garros about her not being allowed to wear the clothing she wore this year (to protect herself from medical difficulties as a result of her C section)is an example of her being discriminated against.
Likewise, her losing her ranking points because of pregnancy (she would have kept them if injured) is a failure of the tour.
There are also many clear examples of other woman tennis players being discriminated against, eg the penalty given to the woman who switched the top around on court because it was back to front.

However, there are times when Serena (as with everyone else) is in the wrong, and when she cries discrimination at those times, it undermines her argument.
It feels a little like in fighting agains tthe discrimination she has received, she sometimes views legitimate rules as just another thing that is attacking her.
This umpire followed the rules correctly. He could have turned a blind eye, he could have bent the rules due to the situation and the person, but that is bad law, and he has a record of applying the letter of it. He has warned Murray for saying "Stupid umpiring" for example (and that's way less important than calling him a thief and a liar). Serena should not have destroyed her raquet when she had already received a warning, and she should not have called him a thief. Many football referees are guilty of reffing the context rather than the game in front of them, and it is bad for the game (the most common example is that if you commit a red card challenge in the first few minutes you are enormously unlikely to get sent off). I give credit to the umpire in this case for applying the rules, rather than letting it go because it's a final (or because it's Serena).
Serena has also complained about the application of drug testing protocol before, in particular when a tester turned up at her house and she went into her panic room and refused to do the test. Somehow, that ended up being a whereabouts failure rather than a refusal (which carries an automatic ban). She then claimed that the frequency of her out of competition tests were discrimination, when the rules are explicit increasing frequency on an athlete who has been out of competition for an extended period and then returns (especially in cases where prior biological passport values are now no longer usable.

In both these cases, she has used her clout as a superstar to get the people at the top of the relevant organisation to back her (the tournament organiser, and the head of USADA), and to get the people who were applying the rules into trouble, rather than doing anything about the rules that were being applied.

Andy, just watched your conference. Please don’t stop trying. Keep fighting. I can imagine your pain and sadness. I hope you can overcome this. You deserve to retire on your own terms, whenever that happens. We love you @andy_murray and we want to see you happy and doing well. 🙏

ETA Having listened to the post match speech, I think he might just go for the resurfacing option and try again.  :D

Is it not unusual for the combined ages of the world top 3 to be over 100 years?

I would say it is.

related factoid from yesterday's coverage: that was the oldest (Gents) semi-final foursome in the open era.

Cracking match by Fed-n-Raf! I'm not a big fan of the latter, but you have to love his commitment. He was giving 110%(at least) in the last few games, as Federer sloooowly closed in on the win. Some amazing points.

I hope the final is as good, although I fear my guy is less likely to win that one.

An example of casual sexism today at the Cincinnati tournament. The women’s semis are scheduled to be played at the same time - so only one match will be on the main show court. The men’s semis are scheduled one after th3 other, allowing both to be played on the main show court. Personally I’d rather see Osaka than Raonic.

ETA: It gets worse. The women’s matches are on the equivalent of courts 1 and 2. The men’s on the equivalent of centre.  Hmmm

I’m quite heartened this morning by the general air of sympathy that seems to prevail in MSM for Emma Raducanu’s retirement due to apparent anxiety issues yesterday evening. It’s a much more positive approach towards mental health than we’ve seen in earlier years. McEnroe even seemed to draw parallels with his own first appearance at Wimbledon although he has also been criticised for his comments.

I think she has a bright future

The Graun notes:

Quote
The BBC commentator John McEnroe has come under fire after suggesting that Emma Raducanu found playing in the last 16 of Wimbledon “a little too much” after she retired from the match on medical grounds.

The three-times men’s champion was criticised by Raducanu’s opponent, Ajla Tomljanovic, as well as by doctors on social media, after suggesting the 18-year-old from Britain had not been able to handle the occasion.

Hah!  How very dare he?  Doesn’t he know she’s BRITISH?  In an earlier era she'd have been coned by Nazi searchlights while standing on a mountain top swathed in a Union Jack, brandishing a cavalry sabre and shouting “Come and get a taste of BRITISH steel, you bally Hun swine… [“cont. p94 of this week’s Gammon Gazette” – Ed.]

Plus we should sympathise because disgraced former International Development Secretary Piggi Patel almost certainly wants to deport her.

Thos that are criticising the former brat of the tennis hall of fame are rather cherry picking his words, because he went on to say that her experience was in many ways similar to his own and that he had been overwhelmed after his, first appearance at Wimbledon at 18, but in the long run it did him good and that her experience would stand her in good stead too. I’m sure I read that in the Graun also.

Having been courtside to witness her panic attack at Wimbledon (and what was, we felt, a very poor quality tennins match - the two of them just slamming back and forth from the baseline with no finess or tactics other than to wait each other out) I think it was the weight of expectation that got to her then. It was the end of the day, many had been drinking (not to excess, but definitely "liberated"), and or course extremely partisan with the accompanying indiscriminate bellowing of support, including on her opponents misses. We'd decided to leave anyway, it was such poor quality tennis, just before they called a halt.  I'm really glad she's worked through that, and she certainly seems to be enjoying her tennis now. It may be another Coco Gauff moment, but at least this time it's a UK player and, like Gauff, I hope she has a long and successful career.

I don't like tennis as such, although Mrs Nutty insists on shouting at the tellybox in support when it is on.  I've been dragged to wimblybong in the past to a final and slept through the match as it was boring.  When Ms Nutty decided to drop her tennis training it was a relief as it was one less activity I had to drive her to.

Mrs Nutty is out tonight, and I had this match on as background TV while I did the household chores.

Well done young lady.     Extremely well done.    I am now going to start the household chores and am not going to complain that watching that game and cheering you on delayed me.    Congrats, and as you may realise from this post it is genuine congrats (not that I expect you to read this).

The point by Raducanu to go two games up in the second set was out of this world. The match was pretty much decided at that point but you have to give Fernandez massive credit for fighting all the way.

There was some, but no more than you'd expect from a supreme physical effort.  Certainly not the orchestarted whooping of a Sharapova.
Title: Re: The tennis...
Post by: Peter on 13 September, 2021, 11:14:14 am
I'm not sure supreme effort is an acceptable reason for vocalising.  Federer doesn't do it.  Does he not make a supreme effort (possibly not - he was so consummately good)?  I don't remember anyone doing it until Monica Seles*.  Mind, being stabbed, as she was, would be an understandable reason.  That was appalling.

All that apart, I watched a little bit of the action on catch-up and was mostly astonished by the sheer speed of both the finalists shots.  They really are very quick and strong.

Seles, incidentally, won her first slam at 16 and had won (I think) 6 by the time she was 19.  But it is still mightily impressive how Raducanu has recovered from her breakdown at Wimbledon.

Jimmy Connors was noted for his vocalisations, to the extent that the late Clive James remarked upon it in one of his TV columns.  Apparently Jimbo used to grunt at the moment his racquet made contact with the ball, but that year he had switched to grunting earlier in the stroke, thereby confusing his opponents into trying to return the grunt instead of the ball.

I saw some UK immigration lawyers making good points about how we may not like how Djokovic has behaved, but the Aussie government using another law to overrule a court ruling in an abusive manner like this is worrying cos next time it might be against someone who isn't as obnoxious... It sets a precedent for such things. If they didn't want him there without vaccinations, the Aussie government should have been clearer to the Tennis bods that their requirements were X and not let Djokovic have a visa at all.

Djokovic also needs to fuck off with his whining about being mistreated tho. Most immigrants who are not rich don't get hearings in mere days and are left for months in limbo while trapped in grim hotels or holding places.
Title: Re: The tennis...
Post by: Jaded on 17 January, 2022, 06:56:01 pm
The court over-rule was about process, as I understand it, not about the legality or otherwise of a visa refusal.

Anyway Djokovic lied.
Title: Re: The tennis...
Post by: barakta on 17 January, 2022, 07:33:59 pm
Yes, it was whether the government was entitled to use the process they did - not whether the process was fair. Which I think is very similar to UKGov changing laws in response to court cases which go against them, it's dodgy.

Djokovic may have lied but as far as I know that's not been proven to the tennis exemption authorities.
Title: Re: The tennis...
Post by: Jaded on 18 January, 2022, 12:28:00 am
No, he was allowed in originally because the judge ruled that the process of refusing him a visa was unfair, in that he wasn't given enough time to respond when he first arrived.

Tennis Australia and the local state appeared to have agreed a visa for him, but as I understand it, the government didn’t.

Putting aside the extraordinary quirk of fate that he caught COVID just when he needed to, there were several issues with his behaviour.

He didn't isolate properly with the COVID that he had.
His visa application had errors in it
He had travelled elsewhere when his visa application said he hadn't.

Correct - some 20 or 40 minutes less that he should have got apparently.

They're not bad at it - not everyone with a show court ticket spends all tgheir time there watching a match, they'll wander around the outside courts too, plus go and eat etc.  And then there are debenture holders who don't always go or sell-on their seat, and some no-shows. All the seats are paid for, so they can’t just let folk in to fill them up.

Anyway, well done Katy!

To absolutely no-ones surprise, Emma Radecanu will now assume her rightful place in the rankings (actually somewhat higher than I expected) at 80, 2 places higher than Hannah Dart, who has the change later today to overtake her and become Britains No. 1 ranked female player.

And if Cam Norrie wins his next 2 matches (certainly a possibility) he'll jump above Djokovich in the rankings.

Yep - ER did seem to be a possible flash-in-the-pan with the US open last year ... perhaps all the "face of . . . " endorsements will fade away.

Hopefully she'll get it all back together, although she does seem to go through coaches at a rate?
Title: Re: The tennis...

She seems to have an extraordinary ability to assess an opponent and change her style to beat that opponent. I would guess that one of the reasons she did so well last years was that her own game wasn't that well known. Now she is well above the parapet that's not the case any more.

Sh'e got quite a few £m so not playing much probably wouldn't affect her that much.

This is certainly a factor, as is her (relative) lack of fitness and strength, although at last year's Wimbledon she was dreadful (I was at the match where she broke down, but prior to that she'd shown no finess whatsoever - nor had her oppoonent, it was a typical low-ranking slug-fest).

Murray struggled in the first set against Nava until he'd sussed his opponents game.

ER has just hired a Russian coach - who split with his previous charge in part because of difficulties getting visas to travel. We'll see how that works out.

I think she'll do better than Croft, and I think she'll benefit from being a bit lower profile next year. And as noted, prize momey isn't that critical when you've got $17million in endorsements.

Anywa, go Cam & Dan - and Jack Draper who had a fantastic result over Auger-Alliasime.

Alcaraz was ranked 55 last year at the US, ER was around 180. She had a fluke run she couldn’t possibly live up to. Typically flaky performance today. She’ll be outside the 100 soon I think. She was (relatively) rubbish at Wimbledon, and remains so.

I was quietly hoping for better things for Radacanu, as she managed to win 3 in a row at the Korean  open. And took the first set off Ostapenko, the first seed, in the semi. Then midway through the second set, the dreaded and all-too-regular medical time-out. She then lost 6 games in a row and retired from the match. It’s hard to see beyond “must work harder” for her atm.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the match! Actually, I'm a big fan of table tennis and always enjoy watching the pros play.

One thing that always stands out to me is how important the serve is in table tennis. It's the only shot in the game that is completely under the server's control, so getting it right can really make a difference.

In fact, there are many different types of serves in table tennis, each with its own unique spin and placement. Some players prefer to use a lot of spin to throw off their opponent, while others rely on speed and placement to win points.

Of course, there are also rules that govern how the serve must be performed. For example, the ball must be tossed at least 6 inches in the air before being struck, and it must be hit so that it bounces once on the server's side of the table and once on the receiver's side of the table.
Title: Re: The tennis...

And it has to be tossed from a flat palm of your hand without imparting spin on the ball and without being obscured from the opponent.

We watched 3 matches today. Women’s singles final, so-so. Men’s doubles, not bad. Men’s wheelchair doubles, for the first time on a show court, excellent.

Hmmm, Djokovitch suggests Wimbledon starts earlier. Then he’s not on court at the scheduled start of the final.

Aus Open 24

Medvedev & Ruusuvuori still going at it... local time 02:30hrs.  Murray has been vocal about late matches.  Bizarre really, same for both players, but hardly optimal for elite sports people.

On a lesser note, well done Katy Boulter. And good luck for the final.
