you do realise most birds nests are protected when they have chicks in them They can only be removed once the the chicks have fledged or if the nests are somewhere that needs sorting out because of health risks.

He's probably supposed to eat the chicks.

probably still in the shell.

He should still ask them to wait a couple of weeks. I should imagine even in France the birds are protected. There's no need to cause friction with the neighbours, just tell them to fuck off  ;D

It's a bit late for him to do that, since they've got the builders next week.  In any case he prefers to rub along peacefully with his neighbours.

and also has low moral standards and no idea of how to live in harmony with our declining wildlife.

Speak for yourself.  The UK has killed off much of its wildlife. Bird populations here are a lot healthier than in the UK - our garden hosts a good flock of sparrows and half a dozen other species, and it's early enough in the season for the birds in the ivy to rebuild.

It also turns out that the ivy has mined the mortar to the extent that the wall is on the point of collapse.

Most of our dwindling bird population are migrants, therefore suffering in other countries. The UK hasn't killed off most of its wildlife, that's a load of of bollocks and a sweeping statement implying that all in the UK are killing wildlife. If you feel the need to justify killed nests of chicks that's fine, just don't try to cover it by saying 'we're all at it'. The wall may be crumbling, it probably has been for years, an extra 20 days wouldn't hurt. Your gardens may host lots of birds, it wont if you keep killing them off!

Like a massive idiot, I managed to lock myself out of the house with no keys at 7:15 this morning, when I stepped out to take Blu for his morning constitutional.

The good news is that I keep a spare set of door keys in my office.
The bad news is that the office is a three-and-a-half mile walk away.
The stupid news is that there's a keysafe on my front door, but I don't currently have a key in it.

Fourth cold this winter. Getting bored of this now.

There are at least three possible causes to my increasing susceptibility as far as I can see.
  • I now work with members of the public rather than a closed workforce.
  • I commute by train rather than driving or cycling - even more germs.
  • And I've hardly been cycling at all lately so I'm decidely unfit.

Well I work too far from home to commute regularly but now the weather is improving I shall endavour to get fit again and coworkers have said they have tended to build some immunity after working there a bit.

Still not happy though.

This is a doozy.

Bloke brings a Colnago in to replace the Ergo levers.

Wants me to drop everything the afternoon before a bank holiday weekend to jump the queue, untape the bars and swap all the cables over and tells me I 'quoted' a tenner to do the work.

For the life of me I don't remember the conversation! He acted all hurt and pulled his face when I told him I wasn't doing the job for that, took his carbon Colnago and put it back in his Volvo coupe before squealing the tyres as he drove off. He's got form for behaving like a dick/spoilt twat. Frankly that's one customer I don't want back.

Coffee machine reassembly FAIL.  Bit with shut-off valve left on draining board.  Coffee machine has fit of incontinence.  Kitchen floor resembles aftermath of something you don't want to contemplate before coffee.

Bloody hell, me!
When you are surrounded by trees, you need to clean out the guttering.  Once during the autumn, and then again in the winter when further build up has ceased.

A very large lake has appeared where the entire roof catchment was cascading.  If I'd remembered to do this timeously, I'd not have had to assend a ladder in the pouring rain in a silly hat armed with a garden trowel this morning.

I'm now cold, wet, mucky and annoyed with myself.

Right.  Log burner is fired up.  I shall not be leaving the house again today.

Great!  More but completely different water problems now.   :(

Lavatory cistern took ages to refill while setting off a cacophony of pipe groanings and rumblings that seemed to go on forever.
The kitchen tap then delivered water to the kettle in a slightly juddery style.
Then almost boiled myself alive in the shower.

I'm not great first thing in the morning, so never put two and two together.  Until going out into the lane and wondering why there was now a fair sized stream running down the road towards me.

Bugger!  Reported on line to  Dwr Cymru.

Well, we have two vans, three blokes, a dear little digger, a bloody great hole in the road, traffic lights and everything!
It's what passes for real excitement round here.

Fair play to them, they repaired the main pretty quickly and then buggered off sharpish.
The bloody great hole and the traffic lights remain.  I assume that will not proceed any further until Tuesday.
Amusingly, the lights are generally on red for any of the few cars that use the lane when there is nothing coming the other way.  I've already watched a neighbour(ish) completely ignore them. (As I would have done too)
