The temperature here is 11.7°C here at the moment. This is in fairly stark contrast to the past two winter solstices (OK, I know 22nd is the sostice this year) when it has been bleedin' freezing and snowy as hell somewhere not really like hell but very cold and snowy.

Incidentally, tomorrow is the anniversary of my weather station arriving and being installed in the outside world.

15cm of snow in Budapest according to my youngest. They are off to make a snowman later. Blue skies & white cloud in Warwick.

Looking at the forecasts, for the week I'm away over Christmas, the temperatures won't even get close to freezing, so I'm going to risk it, and take the Kaffenback, not the snow bike (with studded tyres).

This of course means it'll start snowing tomorrow!

The current forecast temperatures do seem to be dropping in a weeks time, so it could yet be a cold and frosty New Year holiday.  There's no snow currently being forecast for that period, but it's right at the limits of the forecast, so anything could happen.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Cold and frosty, good. Snow, please no. I don't want to be stuck with our trikes at a folk do in a pub with 12% climbs either way out
The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so sure of themselves, and wiser men so full of doubt.

Why is it always chevrons on the way back from the pub?

Could be the same reason they built (artificial)shallow gradients to the middle of Meadowhell Shopping Centre, and charge more rent for the shops at the bottom of the slope. Causes the subconcious to drift towards the pub.

We visited for Geography - wasn't really worth visiting for that either.

The three places I remember visiting at school for Geography were Meadowhell, Blackburn Meadows STW and Supertram. What an enlightening education  ::-)

It isn't today!

Warmest Christmas Day on record for Belfast & Aberdeen? 15°C forecast by the BBC just now. I'm picturing Mrs. Pingu in her bikini.

I recall one Christmas Day, in the late 1980s, in which it was very mild and sunny and my bees were out visiting the late-flowering heather in my mum's garden. I can't remember the precise temperature, but it must have been around 16°C. They are forecasting 11°C round here.

A very mild Christmas, but very windy in the North.

Northern UK has been stormy; gusts have reached 101mph at Sella Ness, Shetland. Provisional figures suggest that the UK as a whole has seen its third warmest Christmas Day on record with Aberdeen reaching 15.1C. Only 1920 and 1896 were milder at 15.6C. Northern Ireland has broken its record of 13.0C set in Belfast in 1988, with Murlough reaching 14.3C. Issued at 1731 on Sun 25 Dec 2011.

I would imagine that it was 1988 that I remember as being a very warm Christmas Day.

For this month, on average, it has been 15C warmer (max and min) in York compared to 2009 and 2010.  There is a tree come out in full blossom on my street - obviously thinks it is spring.

I saw a teenage boy in shorts today, but that seems to be par for the course here, even when it actually is bitterly cold. Those crazy English!

That was unexpected. A couple of cm here, and the temperature is plummeting

We just got hail this afternoon. Dropped the temperature by a few degrees immediately.

I've looked at the forecast for the next 5 days here: nothing above 3°C apparently.
