The Mazda dealer cannot give me my car, even if I wanted to risk driving it home.  The steep ramp from their underground car park is impassable.

FWP, surely*...?
It's more serious when it's your 12-year old's birthday treat in Oxford on Sunday and, if you don't have a car by the end of tomorrow, there will be tears!

I'm now watching the BMWs sliding around outside.  Two in the last five minutes.

We were sat behind one on the ring road just now; the number of people willing to try and whizz past* a car clearly fishtailing its way up a gentle slope was eye-rolling.†

*Well, relatively speaking.
†If unsurprising; this is the West Midlands, after all.

Maybe it's a regional thing, then, cos I was thinking while out today that one of the good things about the LEGENDARY BRITISH UNPREPAREDNESS FOR SNOW is that for one day a year – okay, maybe two days every decade – cyclists and footists dominate the streets, relegating driveists to their rightful subsidiary role.

I have just shovelled snow off the pavement from the corner of the street to the pub, taking particular care to throw it into the gutter.
Unlike the neighbour up the road who has cleared his drive leaving a six foot high pile completely blocking the pavement.

I just panic bought a house litre of milk.  We'd completely run out and I was quite surprised that the local shop still had loads left.  Unlike the newspapers which haven't been seen for days.

Just looked out of the winow for the first time since this morning.  We've had enough that I can no longer see the writing on the lid of the wheelie bin from a first-floor window and passing traffic is making a slushy sort of noise.

I was going to be heroic and go to the pub but my wife expleted a 'but it's fucking cold!' Wuss. I like it when she swears. You'd think someone from Essex would swear a lot, but she's like posh Essex. I know, who knew?

The entire east wall of our house has a shiny rippled coating.  Quite surreal.  The washing machine in the garage is still frozen.

Walking the lanes and paths above the town was hard work as the snow has a hard icy crust which shatters at each foot-step.

Is it just me or my part of the world (Shropshire), but anyone else think this so called 'Beast from the East', is err, lacking some teeth?

Still no snow to speak of in Shropshire!

At last. I thought we'd offended the weather Gods or something.

I was supposed to be getting a train to Huddersfield tomorrow, but they're not running north of Newcastle.

Our device now tells us that it's 1°C.

Dez and I went for a walk and it's amazing how warm a calm 1° feels when you have been used to very windy -5°C.

Ironic considering where the railways were born.  Is there anything commemorating the Stockton-Darlington railway?  I've never had time to stop and look around

Gales broke the pontoon again. Cue dash out to the mooring and 1.5hrs hauling the pontoon arm out of the river, jury-rigging something up. My back will be telling me off today.

I'm not used to that sort of work anymore. Had to keep stopping and putting my hands in my pockets to thaw them out. Holding steel, hauling on frozen ropes in this weather is no joke.

Something, presumably a RWD BMW with low-profile summer tyres, has collided with the telecoms cabinet across the road at some point overnight.  I'm reasonably sure our phoneline doesn't go through that one, which is just as well, as it's now leaning over at a 45° angle.

I assume Kelly will be along to bodge it up at some point after the thaw.  This weather's about as good for fiddly line work as it is for hauling ropes.

In Pompey, it's mostly thawed already, and it's raining. Better still, the central heating's duty ratio is markedly improved on what it was Thursday-Friday.

The thaw stared around midnight, looking at the local weather station. It has continued today so road is mostly clear, and everywhere else sodden and slushy.
