All in all, A-, good try but lost the edge a bit when and after the athletes came in.

Mind you, having been at an Opening Ceremony a couple of years ago, the athletes bit drags far more on TV than it does live, IMO.

I thought it was mainly terrible. Cheap-looking, clichéd and embarrassing. It wasn't the fault of the performers, it was whoever put it together. It looked like they were trying to do what Danny Boyle did, but for Scotland, and with a budget of about £37. The bit after the athletes had come in was much better.

I loved the start, I thought they played the clichés brilliantly, it was so OTT. It should be the UK Eurovision entry next year.

I think that, in terms of your speed as a fraction of the world's bests' speed, that makes you a marginally faster swimmer than I am a cyclist.

An English friend of mine yesterday commented that 'it was nice to win, now that the US wasn't there to take all the medals".
It's largely ignored over here(Canada). Only CBC is doing anything on it and this is a a sports-mad country!.

Pedalled out to Strathclyde Park and saw a bit (only the cycling) of the triathlon relay earlier. Felt a bit sorry for Mauritius - they were lagging behind the other teams at the end, and the heavens opened, so most of the spectators were leaving before they'd finished. We went down to the barrier and cheered on their last man.

Was a bit disappointed not to see any Welsh flags (though there may have been some, just not in the crowd I could see) - I'm going to have to find one before next week's road race!

Bobb and I really enjoyed the badminton quarter-finals yesterday, but had to leave early to get the last train back. I've never really had any interest in badminton, but seeing it played by people who are really good at it was amazing. Very impressed with the organisation and helpfulness of all the volunteers. Not at all impressed with the price of the food at the Emirates Arena - one cheese ploughmans sandwich (two slices bread, some cheese, some pickle and some tomato) and one Ayrshire ham and cheese sandwich (two slices bread, some ham, some cheese) - £8.50. Add on a bottle of water, a bottle of Bru, two muffins and two Tunnocks teacakes and it came to £19.40.

I saw a bit of the men's marathon this morning (by accident, really - trying to get back across town on the way back from a ride, but many roads were shut, and we saw some of the runners go past just near the finish as we were trying to work out which way to go).

I hope next Sunday's weather is better than this for the road race!

The most casual event has to be the full bore shooting - bit like an agricultural show with spectators in a field separated by men with big guns by a thin blue rope. The scoring was quite archaic - a person with a large target board and a telescope translating the hits to the board for the spectators to see by putting hand written red dots on the cardboard.

Not the most enthralling but nice enough with a picnic and a bit of a clue as to how it is going on.

The glamour event has to be the shotgun though - nice pink clouds of dust for the finals (for tele - they use standard clays for the qualifiers.)

Had a nice chat to various athletes form parts far and away.

We are on the way back to Edinburgh, having seen some high energy racing Laura Trott win gold by the narrowest of margins, meet loads of v friendly Clydesiders, see the awful selection of food. Burgers and chips, fish suppers, haggis balls and chips.

Still, I suppose it is more humane than culling them.

There are some very late trains back from Glasgow during the games - I hope that you didn't make your plans via the normal timetables?

I'm impressed by the lack of booze in your shopping list. £4.50 at Hampden for a bottle of Heineken. Can't remember how much the equivalent at the Emirates / Hoy arena was the last time we were there pre games.
My sister advises that the hockey has the best catering - we will find out if she is correct tomorrow!
