[HAMR] 9th January 2016 - Teethgrinder Day 155
« on: 09 January, 2016, 09:26:17 am »
Looks like TG was off about an hour ago and is a few miles away from MG!

EDIT:  looks like a "cycle-by" of Marsh Gibbon with TG inbound to Bicester

To get 205+miles today Steve would need to be looking at MK->Severn bridge->MK (AFAICS); going to be wet...

Absolutely minging it down just west of the river at the moment.

I wonder what point Steve will turn at?  Will he go to the bridge services for a rest and dry out or turn a few miles before and avoid a 75m drop & return climb?

It's tempting to see I I can intercept him but it's so gloomy out there the photos wouldn't great.  Probably not quite as dark as my December 4th stalking fail though.

If Steve is going back home it looks like it's going to be an early morning finish unless he picks up speed with this tailwind (well it's blowing a gale here in East Midlands, and pissing it down, thoroughly horrible it is).

It's absolutely hissing it down in Oxfordshire at the moment and has been for a while.

That will have just about passed him now. Utterly grim.
[It looks even worse up north though, like some regions really need some rain ]

Not too far from home now.

Safe home Steve.

Indeed.

I ventured out on foot today (in Surrey) and got caught in one hell of a downpour. I haven't seen rain like that in a long time. And I thought of Steve, pounding out the miles, somewhere not too far away: if the weather I was getting wasn't with him then, it was sure to hit him at some point.

I think that what Steve has, what he needs, and what will see him through is 'fortitude'.

Allez Steve, safe home.

Looks as if he is back in MK. 191 miles on the tracker, presumably a higher figure will appear on Strava.

He has nothing left to prove to anyone except himself.

That was a good effort in yesterday's weather.

196.7 miles on Strava.

Steve must have ridden the entire return journey from Yate in the cold, dark and wet - amazing effort.

Re. his Strava comment of "Close, but no cigar", I must admit to wondering... when Steve was at Yate, why he didn't chose to extend the turnaround point to a further 5-10mls West, and get a 'symbolic' target 205 in the bag...

Is this a genius new tactic that we hadnt considered before?

He's going to have to soon. Based on 6,250 for January he's now got to ride 208.2 for the remainder of the month.

Perhaps he could achieve it by pedalling the same cadence in a slightly higher gear?   :D

That would seem like a wasted opportunity; if he rides 213.2-218.2mpd that's a whole lot less needed in April & May!

Not sure where the every day comes from, but Steve himself was conscious of missing the target 'no cigar' - technically with the route as it was, if the return point had been 3.3mls further west, Steve would have bagged the target.  Though, conditions were grim... and hopefully he can make it up anyway.

It was grim indeed here, 30-40 miles SW of Yate. I didn't much enjoy driving to Bristol in it.

It doesn't sound quite as daft when the only alternative which gets to the target is 'just ride another 5-10 miles tomorrow'!
