Good News: My slow and steady weight loss continues.
Bad News: My wedding ring is is danger of slipping off these cold mornings, and the jewellers are of course  closing for the duration.

You can buy mini silicone inserts that should hold it in place. eBay is your friend.

First time I've heard of silicone being used in fingers...
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

They make squirrel condoms out of silicone, for applications where hygiene isn't important and a thicker re-usable one will suffice.

So I discovered! All I recalled was some gold clip-in things.

GN: I got a purple pair of Keen sandals from Sportpursuit. Super cheap cos youth sizes so a mere £14.99. And did I mention purple:smug:
BN: doesn't look like I'll be needing them any time soon. Oh well, they'll keep.

Hope they are not made of polyurethane foam, in which case they might not keep...

I had a pair of Clarke's Hikers; tried them then put them in a cupboard. About 10 years later wore them for a 3-mile test and they fell to pieces half way round. Not good value.

GN:  After almost 40 years of holding them, finally had a premium bond win.

BN: It wasn't one of the top prizes.

Well done Reg and ERNIE!

In a similar vein:

GN: Mrs Legs also got a £25 premium bond win this month.
BN: Because she's got the maximum holding, her expected monthly winnings is actually £50.
GN: She won a £1000 prize a few months back, and is well ahead of the game.
BN: Still waiting for the £1m...

At the age of 12 I bought 5 premium bonds. (That was a lot of paper rounds for a 12 year old kid)
Since then I have won precisely nothing.

Now, I know 5 is not many, but in 59 years surely I could have got lucky once?

I've also never been asked for jury duty.  I wonder if there is a connection?
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

I've had £30 worth since the mid-80s, bought by a grandparent.  They've never won anything.  Indeed, I only found out about them recently when I set up online access to National Savings.

I did actually find this out a couple of weeks ago while I was googling to find out if I could have my safety boots resoled.

I had a pair of Clarke's Hikers; tried them then put them in a cupboard. About 10 years later wore them for a 3-mile test and they fell to pieces half way round. Not good value.

My brother was complaining of something similar a few weeks back. He is a tremendous hoarder.

My safety boots I had assumed probably fell to bits after being exposed to crude oil and other such nasties as you might find on the floor of an oil platform.
I know I said the Keens will keep but I'm hoping it's not going to be years... even if they do fall to bits it'll only be 15 quid down the drain.

I would say not being called for jury duty is you getting lucky. They keep coming back for me.

I had some lovely black Ecco nubuck leather lace-ups I bought from the Clark's outlet in Street, when I was a choir course at Wells Cathedral nearby. They were smart enough for concerts and special occasions and comfortable enough to stand all day in them.
Soles turned to crumbly dust.
Same with my K sandals.

GN: as of today, my youngest child is more than half my age in competed years.
BN: as of today, my youngest child is more than half my age in competed years.

As a matter of comparison, my mother had to wait until she was 87 before that became true for her, and I reached my 44th birthday. I am a mere 66.

GN: I've won Premium Bonds prizes, last one just a few weeks ago!

GN: I've never been called for Jury Duty (is there an age cut off)

Not sure what this counts as: At one point Gran, Dad and I were very nearly 90, 60, 30. One of us was out by a couple of months.
It is simpler than it looks.

I remember when I reached the half my father's age point.  I took him out for the day and only told him about the half his age bit later in the day.  He was quite emotional.

It's sobering isn't it? - I'm now past the ages my parent managed by 20 years (mother) and 2 years (father)

Yes.  I'm closer to Wombat's situation.  My ancestry hasn't taken up much of earth's valuable time:-

Dad 39
Grandfather 26
Great grandfather 44
Great great grandfather c 35

There are several tragedies there: congenital illness, pit and foundry accidents and general working-classedness.  I'm from the first generation to go to university and waste his education.  We are not without problems but I know how lucky I've been.

Not sure which bit of my arithmetic is wrong.

I was 66 in June.

My daughter is 34 today.

My mother was born in May 1911 so was 43 years 1 month or so older than me. She would have already reached her 87th birthday (19th May 1998) when I reached my 44th, and therefore exceeded half her age in whole years on 26th June 1998.
