That finale had everything - a who's who of women's road racing, the two Germans taking turns to attack, do-or-die efforts from Vos and Johansson which looked as if they might just succeed, a thrilling sprint finish - and the right result!

I suspect Vos might have been the strongest on the day, but she blew her chances by attacking too soon on the last big climb (isn't hindsight wonderful?), and Nicole Cooke played the perfect tactical game.

Indeed. Everyone knows Vos has the best sprint in the female peloton, but she completely screwed that up.

Edit: I still don't understand why she tried to break when she could have easily won a sprint ::shrugs::

Nicole definitely has one of the best tactical minds.

But Nicole also has the biggest balls! I love the way she's all over the bike and looks like she's struggling to hang on and then just blasts it!

Really enjoyed watching the race and at last Nicole has that rainbow jersey. Job well done.

Totally agree. It was superb. I thought she looked too tired near the end but when she managed to hang on to Arndt's wheel on the closing straight, there was only going to be one winner. The way she switched from Arndt's wheel to Vos adn then blasted past her was simply magnificent. I am totally awestruck.

I suspect Vos might have been the strongest on the day, but she blew her chances by attacking too soon on the last big climb (isn't hindsight wonderful?), and Nicole Cooke played the perfect tactical game.

I thought Chris Boardman summed it up perfectly - you can either set the pace and attempt a break or you can save it for a sprint, but you can't do both. I reckon the only reason Vos attempted the break was because she was scared of Cooke beating her in a straight sprint.

The enduring class of Longo was also very impressive - she wasn't that far off the pace of people young enough to be her daughter.
