Tan Hill Overnighter March 20/21st: The Equinox Weekender
« on: 31 December, 2019, 05:59:28 pm »
I was chatting with Deano about how we haven't had a Tan Hill overnighter for awhile.  So, here's the plan for another one.

1) Ride to the Tan Hill Inn on Saturday March 21st
2) Eat food and drink beer
3) Do some weird pagan equinox shizzle (other religious options are available).
4) Go to sleep - either in the dorms if you're sensible or in tents if you're well'ard
5) Sunday 22nd: Exfiltrate to a transport hub, preferably via some comedy off-roading.

D and I can both do the weekend of the spring equinox -  the weekend after is less good as there's a rather excellent audax running nearby.  That leaves the choice of Friday 20th or Saturday 21st

So, who wants to go to Tan Hill?  Just in case you've forgotten how much AWESOME FUN that these trips always are, here's a reminder. Here's what it looks like if you go in the autumn:

... and here's what it looks like if you go in the winter.

Worrying, I suspect this may be the Brompton's turn, but that seems unwise...

I'm sort-of interested but I would need to do some proper cycling between now and then...

Well - if you pull yourself together in this regard, so will I.

Perhaps a few of us Mid-Essex types could go?  I need to see what 2020 looks like before committing (new job etc...)

Just checked the work calendar and I'm not on so count me in.  I might even camp this time.

Yay Ruthie  :

This is all shaping up nicely.  I've taken the plunge and booked the Friday off work.

I’m tempted with this, would the main drinking night be on the Saturday? as I’m unable to book the Friday off work

The plan is for one night, though if people really want to do two then we can do that too.  Saturday night is currently winning the vote, although one of the votes for Saturday was mine and I really don't mind Friday, whereas at least one of the Friday votes definitely can't do Sat.  The kitchen at Tan Hill stays open until about 9, and we've previously bribed the chef to stay open a wee bit later for people who have made truly epic attempts to get there after work on Friday eve - or who are quite disorganised.

I'm minded to leave the poll open for another couple of days and then make a decision based on who we have and how strong their feelings are.

That's the joy of the Tan Hill Event, Cudzo. Ride from wherever, and share tales at the meet of derring-do. We'll be riding from Durham, probably.
Ride back is usually to Darlo, and that's all downhill.
