Come on, Tim!
And back down to three in the world, which is unfortunate because it means he could end up having to play Novak in the semis of the US Open.

Not "alledgely" if you heard him.
Just noticed that the last time GB, with Fred Perry, won the DC in 1936, Fred Perry also won Wimbledon for the third and final time...

Apparently John Lloyd criticised Murray for not doing enough to big-up the LTA. Perhaps that has something to do with the LTA having absolutely nothing to do with his rise to prominence - nor with Laura Robson, Kyle Edmunds, Joanne Konta, Heather Watson etc. etc. All relied on parents to fund their development. And today Murraty is saying that talking to the LTA is a waste of time, and that it's concerning that there are no juniors coming up. He also observed that when he went to the National Tennis Centre on Tues and Weds before the Davis Cup tie to get some hitting in, there were NO players using it - neither gym nor courts.
As long as UK LTA affiliated tennis clubs (there are exceptions of course, one being our local centre at Halton) allow adult members to throw juniors off court at will (even if those juniors are playing a competition round - yes it happens) then the LTA will remain a waste of space and we will languish at the bottom of the tennis league tables if not for the perseverance and sacrifice of competitive parents.
Rant over :)
Murray said one of his main frustrations was a lack of players to practise with whenever he is in the UK.
After returning from the Shanghai Masters in October, Murray said he arrived at the National Training Centre in London to find no other players present.
"I was there on a Monday at about 3pm and then on Tuesday, at the same time," he said.
"There was not one person using any of the indoor courts and not one person in the gym. I took photos of it because the place cost like £40m and there are no people."
LTA chief Downey said the coverage created by Britain's successful weekend in Belgium should help "encourage participation".
It was David Lloyd.

Worryingly the head of the Russian Tennis Federation says that she will be at the Rio Olympiad. From the BBC news link, its clear that several athletes have had bans of just a few months - plenty of time for Rio!
Like to bet on that ?
The world has another Murray this morning  (actually since Sunday it seems)
Meldonium
It increases blood supply and "increases the capacity for work", which is why so many endurance athletes take it, and why it has been banned.
Until Jan 1st it has been a "legal PED".
She earns over £30 million a year and employs people to tell her what drugs she can and can't take. People at this level of sport don't go to Boots and read the labels themselves.
Note. If she doesn't employ someone to tell her what drugs she can and can't take then she's a stingy fool.
The Russian said she had taken meldonium, a heart medicine which improves blood flow, for a decade following various health problems including regular sicknesses, early signs of diabetes and “irregular” results from echocardiography exams. “I was first given the substance back in 2006. I had several health issues going on at the time,” she said.

This would be the 2006 when she won the US Open and three other Tier I tournaments, reached the semi-finals of two other Grand Slams, and accrued sufficient points that she was WTA No 1 in January 2007? Those health problems must have been really holding her back. ::-)

Athletes caught using meldonium could avoid a ban after anti-doping chiefs said it was not clear how long it takes the drug to leave the body.
And he's in the final, against Djokovic.
Serena :(
I love both the Williams sisters. I think they've both peaked and are beginning the downward slopes, but they're still amazing players.Serena :(
Serena is an awful sportsperson. Glad we have a new winner.
There's something I don't like about Djokovic, and never have. I can't quite figure it either. A faux-niceness or smarminess or something, dunno. :-\

Isner v. Tsonga. 11-10 in the 5th.

I'm impressed by how he uses his big service to his advantage at the crucial moments. Granted, it often doesn't produce the most exciting tennis, but you can't deny that yesterday's match had tension in spades. Very impressive performance from Tsonga to prevail in the end.
Yup, very boring - but it's not his fault. He was born to serve - he's just using his natural talents. (same as Novak chose to be a multiple grand-slam winner, instead of being a mediocre accountant/plumber/teacher)Absolutely agree. One of the best things about tennis is that you get as much tension from the scoreline as from the rallies...

I'll stick with drugs. The rest are given. To be clear, are you accusing Serena of doping?

Time's been up on that for a while. Nadal is a crock now (long predicted and sadly) and age is finally catching up on the Fed Express.
I'm surprised Murray is that close to Djokovic - cool.
The highlight of the Men's final yesterday has got to be the whole crowd jeering David Cameron. :demon:
It's also worth noting Murray exited the US open at the round of 16. Federer was a finalist and Djokovic the champion. So they're both defending a lot of points from that. I think it will be hard for Federer to get to the final again.

Also, dogs can be a vector.
Someone obtaining contaminated urine and adding it to her water bottles seems quite far-fetched.

RLY.Andy Murray looked absolutely knackered last night. I can't see him winning.
O RLY?
One set all in the final.[mens doubles, I presume!]
Oops, thus could be in the Paralympics thread.
I'm not sure Andy M has much of a chance of top spot this year, but he does have a chance.
Do you folks actually care about the rankings?Only if Andy Murray is no1.
However, I think being world no. 1 is a big thing, myself. It has been slightly devalued in the women's game in the past when a world no.1 existed who had at the time never won a GS event. I'm not sure if that's ever happened in the men's game.
If he does it and wins the overall then he could still lose it at the O2.
He will be officially confirmed as world number one when the revised rankings are released on Monday.
Well, Andy now knows he has to win all his remaining matches to retain his no. 1 ranking.
And he looks like doing the hard way, if he manages it at all :-\
He's into thefinal.
There is a complication to the calculation for the year-end ranking, which is the 275 Davis Cup final points for last year coming off on Nov 28th.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/andy-murray/mc10/rankings-breakdown
That brings things a lot closer.

Hence why he has to win all his matches this week to retain the number 1 spot I guess.
Half the time Murray seems to think he's playing Hamlet instead of tennis.
That's his first hold after nearly an hour.
There can't be many matches where all the sets go to tie-breaks.
Pure dead brilliant.
Brexit, Trump and now Murray vs. Djokovic ;)Nicola should call a referendum for Wednesday!
FYI
Johanna Konta was born in Sydney, Australia on 17 May 1991, the daughter of Hungarian parents Gábor, a hotel manager, and Gabriella, a dentist. Her parents had emigrated separately from Hungary and met in Australia. One of Konta's grandfathers, Tamás Kertész (1929—1989), played football for Ferencvárosi TC, won two international caps for Hungary in the 1950s and later coached the Ghana national team. Konta has an elder sister, Éva Emese, from her father's previous marriage.
Konta's childhood was spent in Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches, where she was introduced to tennis at an after-school programme at the age of eight. When she was 14, she began attending the Sanchez Casal academy in Barcelona, spending 15 months there in an attempt to further her development. While she was in Spain her parents moved to England.
Makes you proud to be British.
I wonder - if she'd stuck with "Team Australia", would there be Aussies moaning about her foreign heritage?FYI

Oddly enough I did already know that, as I suspect do most people who follow tennis. She's chosen to be British, so I shall support her as such.
I doubt it - it doesn't seem to matter to them that Tomic was born in Germany to Croat and Bosnian parents, or that Kyrios has a mixed Greek and Malaysian heritage.
I think Indian Wells has dropped off today.Oh dear (http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/tennis/andy-murray-struggles-explain-shock-loss-indian-wells-vasek-pospisil-a7625266.html):
Well well.
So Murray drops 35 ranking points and Djokovic drops 910.

BBC says Murray only drops 20?
I haven't managed to see a single Konta match. Is she any good?? Can she go further? She is very good, and seems to be developing a Murray-like ability to keep fighting back from behind. If she can beat Venus in the semi-final, I think she'll win the final, but Venus is playing well, and well, she's Venus.
No one likes him!!
He doesn't care!
I have gradually warmed to him over the years, though that did take a bit of a knock when he revealed his No 7 jacket when winning Wimbledon last time.
He wins out on the sheer elegance and apparent effortlessness with which he plays the game. We will never see another like him. One of the supreme sportsmen of all time.
So, it's 5-0 to Ms Muguruza in the second set. She needs her service game to win*.
And the male American member of the commentary team has only just stopped going on about how great Ms Williams is. When she lost the first set, he said that set had been hers to win,
He didn't defend it well at all. Must try harder
Perhaps this is the time for Alex Zverev to shine
I'm at the Aussie Open. We lucked out and are watching Nadal.
Some Scottish lad is playing Queens tomorrow, ranked 156th. Wonder if he’s any good.Turns out he is, just out of practice. He did so well, it was great.
That kind of tennis is dull. I had a friend there this afternoon and he said it really spoilt what he thought was going to be the fun of watching the men's semi finals.I do agree with the bold. (6 hours is too long for a spectator sport. I'm not surprised your mate didn't enjoy himself. Perhaps extra-time then penalties is the answer? No? ... )
It's an awful attritional contest just to see who is going to lose to Djokovic/Nadal. Big serving nonsense like that cannot compete with players who can actually play ground strokes.
Not sure what the answer is. Either tie-breaks at 6-6 in the fifth set or maybe at 12-12. Letting it go on like that and the players have little incentive to do anything in their non-service games.

Is it not unusual for the combined ages of the world top 3 to be over 100 years?I would say it is.
Johanna Konta is the first British woman to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open since Jo Durie made the semi-finals in 1983 - that's 36 years ago!
The BBC commentator John McEnroe has come under fire after suggesting that Emma Raducanu found playing in the last 16 of Wimbledon “a little too much” after she retired from the match on medical grounds.
The three-times men’s champion was criticised by Raducanu’s opponent, Ajla Tomljanovic, as well as by doctors on social media, after suggesting the 18-year-old from Britain had not been able to handle the occasion.
The Graun notes:Thos that are criticising the former brat of the tennis hall of fame are rather cherry picking his words, because he went on to say that her experience was in many ways similar to his own and that he had been overwhelmed after his, first appearance at Wimbledon at 18, but in the long run it did him good and that her experience would stand her in good stead too. I’m sure I read that in the Graun also.QuoteThe BBC commentator John McEnroe has come under fire after suggesting that Emma Raducanu found playing in the last 16 of Wimbledon “a little too much” after she retired from the match on medical grounds.

Hah! How very dare he? Doesn’t he know she’s BRITISH? In an earlier era she'd have been coned by Nazi searchlights while standing on a mountain top swathed in a Union Jack, brandishing a cavalry sabre and shouting “Come and get a taste of BRITISH steel, you bally Hun swine… [“cont. p94 of this week’s Gammon Gazette” – Ed.]
Plus we should sympathise because disgraced former International Development Secretary Piggi Patel almost certainly wants to deport her.
For those that don’t have Prime it’s also on Channel 4
I'm not a big enough tennis fan to watch, but if I was, I'd have C4 with the sound turned down, radio 5Live for the audio.
What a match, what a result. Both players were amazing.
Bloody yoof of today, with their talent and dedication and grace and eloquence…
If they can resist coaches attempts to beef them up, both will return longed-for (by me) grace to a sport which is going to miss Roger Federer, the epitome of grace amongst grunters and groaners. Is that right? Neither is a grunter?
To be honest, Matt, I was guessing, purely from having seen half a rally (with the sound turned off!). I actually followed the final by text on the website only and then with only half an eye. They just looked so graceful I was taking a chance!
In fairness Norrie played Davis Cup tennis for GB in 2018 when still outside the top 100 in the world rankings.
Add to that a Scots father and a Welsh mother its hardly tenuous to consider him British.
What does it say about a nation, if its population* gets hot under the collar about one of their
tennis players, who could be deported from a foreign country?
*Well, perhaps not all of them.
No, he was allowed in originally because the judge ruled that the process of refusing him a visa was unfair, in that he wasn't given enough time to respond when he first arrived.
Hadn't realised that Scots weren't British ???That depends on whether they are winning or losing.
After much fanfare about the British prowess at tennis while our plucky sports persons are away at the colonies, this mornings news is a Scotsman and a Canadian woman have both been knocked out of the tournament. ;)

Those with long memories will remember the Andy Murrayometer which, in the days before he won Wmbldn*, correlated the BRITISHness of Mr Murray with his world ranking.

The border acts as a kind of diode whereby a Scottish victory filters southwards and... is never forgotten; mentioned at every vaguely related sporting event until the end of time; bridges and grit lorries are named in honour ...

It never ceases to amaze me how bad Wimbledon are at filling the seats, particularly on the show courts. It is rather galling to be watching on TV, unable to be there, but seeing so many empty seats, even on the show courts.
Three sets maximum...
Maybe ER will do an Annabel Croft: throw in the towel at 21 and relaunch "Treasure Hunt"?
I would guess that one of the reasons she did so well last years was that her own game wasn't that well known. Now she is well above the parapet that's not the case any more.
RF retirement defo on the cards for a while - a true great of the game. That back hand...
RE. ER's form, contrast with Carlos Alcaraz, both 19yrs. CA has an apparently has a well functioning, tight knit team, including family and former grand slam winner & world no 1 (JCF), unfortunately ER seems to be missing this.
I was quietly hoping for better things for Radacanu, as she managed to win 3 in a row at the Korean open. And took the first set off Ostapenko, the first seed, in the semi. Then midway through the second set, the dreaded and all-too-regular medical time-out. She then lost 6 games in a row and retired from the match. It’s hard to see beyond “must work harder” for her atm.
Heartily supporting Christopher Eubanks and the rather comely Elina Svitolina now that the British singles interest has dried up. :thumbsup:Bugger,
