Staple Sizing Rexel 73
« on: 14 January, 2012, 06:41:18 pm »
Can anyone explain the sizing of staples?  In particular the Rexel 73/8 and 73/10 range.

I have looked up staple sizing and the general concensus is that the first number is the wire guage, large number thinner wire, and the second is the leg length.  The leg length I can understand, that is fine and works for the 26/6 (6mm leg) and 73/8 (8mm leg) but I can find nothing on the width of the staple.

The 73/8 size is narrower then the 26/6.  The 26/6 is 12.65mm wide whereas the 73/8 is only 10.7mm wide.
Also the 26/6 had a staple thickness of 0.5mm and the 73/8 has a thickness of 0.95mm. ???

I have a Rexel Trojen plier type stapler that Arch needs to use, as it has heavy duty staples in it, but I only have a few staples left.
We can find Rexel 73 staples that are expensive and other brands that are a bit cheaper.  However, there is no indication that the other brands will be the right width or the right thickness.

Any suggestions before we spend a big lump of money of 5000 staples that may be the wrong size?

Cheers. :)

Rexel 73/10s are little more than £15 for 5000 on ebay. I'm not sure I'd agonise over alternatives.

IIRC 25 SWG corresponds to 0.5 mm.

Bike spokes, old English knitting needles and needles for injection all come in SWG...

I'll have a look at work tomorrow - we used to use a Rexel Trojan.  I'm fairly sure we have boxes 'surplus to requirement' but I can't recall if they are genuine Rexel.

I'll get back to you tomorrow evening (Monday).
