The Who

on the Badminton estate, which was interesting. It was billed as being 'Bristol', which it wasn't. I would say they probably had 1/3 to 1/2 fewer people than they were set up for.

I saw them at The O2 last Week. Not a massive fan or anything, but they put on a decent show....
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

The Von Brandenburgs also went to the O2 one and seemed pretty chuffed with the result.

So many bands and performers.
Headliners were Skerryvore, Peat & Diesel, The Proclaimers

Skerryvore were fantastic. Absolutely brilliant show live.

Peat & Diesel, the locals, brought the house down. The lead singer was relatively sober, so played and sang well. Sadly didn't enjoy it because of the screaming from the crowd (note; take earplugs)

The Proclaimers . . .  Well, they are competent, tight and professional. Not a big fan, enjoyed the performance.

Best new discoveries;
The Langan Band.  Reminded me of Tom Waits, not in musical style, but for the utter disregard for convention in singing and playing. Bought their album before they'd even completed the set, and a T shirt.
Niteworks Really excellent live.

Wackiest; NogoodBoyo I enjoyed them, MrsC didn't.

Most pointless; Talisk. The crowd absolutely loved them. I thought they played the same thing over and over. Great performers, live.

Been to a few sets and took piccies of some

Start with Molly's Party Band

Then a singer, Susana Baca

Then a gritty intense Ukrainian Band Dakh Daughters

This was Mokoomba.

Polobi and The Gwo Ka Masters

Last pic Bombay Bicycle Club. I was looking forward to this, but they came across like some low budget Coldplay.

Then a glimpse of the Shattered Ankles, of who I wish I'd seen more from closer in...

So, I am sat here, two and a half hours later, still not understanding what I have just seen.

Apparently "’The Comet Is Coming’ is a London-based band who incorporate elements of jazz, electronica, funk and psychedelic rock."

Well, no. That's like saying The Beatles are a Popular Beat Combo. M'Lud.

Astounding set. One of the best I've ever seen.

Thumpy techno grinding electronic keyboard bass with a thrashy edgy drum kit. All overlaid with industrial saxophone.

Basically, this is Van der Graaf Generator updated without the Prog or the Rock. Or the vocals.

It is simpler than it looks.

Sounds brilliant!

Was it a bit like this band I saw last night?

Well, a short trip this evening.

Half a song of Soul II Soul. Which was enough.

Ending with Femi Kuti, for a few more songs than a half, but not many.

Really hoped the programme write-up on KUUNATIC was adequate.

It wasn't.

And the winner is

MADMADMAD

I'd picked them from a fairly nondescript and somewhat inaccurate description in the programme. This is a clip from a review and is more accurate:

"MADMADMAD are utter, unbridled elation."

It is simpler than it looks.

The Spooky Men's Chorale last night at Kings Place in That London.

I've seen them a few times before but not for a while. Acapella Orstraylians doing a mix of cover versions (Jolene anyone? Bohemain Rhapsody like you've not heard before), Georgian (not the Mason-Dixon one) folk songs, a couple from Ukraine and finishing up with Tennyson's Crossing The Bar.  The last was really moving.  Great fun.

Not really a gig, but did involve music.

Yes. I'd booked before the news came out. Shabaka Hutchings seems to be planning to stop playing sax, at least for a while.

I didnt realise you liked this sort of stuff. As you probably know there is a huge scene in London, Bristol etc with often very interchangeable groups.

If you get the chance, go and see Sarathy Korwar and MadMadMad.

Equally, please post up if you see something worth sharing

I had thought about going to Reading, but had something to cover locally.

The Comet is Coming would have been better  ;D

Hah - I was there too. Fourth time I've seen them. Sadly, quite a few of the original 'core' members seem to have dropped away (I know one has died) but the 'bought-in' local singers were doing a pretty good job. I could have done without the more overt Aussie political song - agreed with the sentiment but the actual song was poor - but there was a good mix of old and new material.

'We Are Not A Men's Group' is always a welcome addition. Ironically, the last time they played in London I dragged along an Australian friend and his wife. I've recently learned that he has actually gone off and joined one of these 'men's groups' and is living off-grid somewhere in the Welsh Marches, while he comes to terms with the 'unresolved issues with his father'  ;)
Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

Thanks for the recommendations. Like what I've heard of MadMadMad. My next gig in this general part of the musical map will be Get The Blessing at Moth Club in London
