Edit: I really like that photo. How close were you?

Thanks. No more than 2 ft, I'd say. But with a wire fence between us. Sorry for the delay in replying, BTW.

I've seen more than one Hereford bull walk straight through a wire fence (and several other kinds of fence for that matter).

(However, the motivation was usually lust rather than aggression.)

One escaped through that very fence this summer, so I'm told.

Here he is with his mates, when they obligingly lined up for a group photo.

Now that's actually quite rare - looks like a British White (a polled domesticated version of the White Park). The ones in the background look to have a fair bit of Gloucester in them, again, fairly rare.

Well, they're in Stanmer Park, outside Brighton, if that's any help.

On the North Downs on Sunday 27th January. Not sure what type this is. I know one of them's my lovely lady. The other one is like a teddy bear.

Ah, that's Hugo's dream cow that is Riggers - a Belted Galloway.

Delicious, apparently.

Cycling past Telscombe village yesterday, cam across a site I've never seen before. Cows in a line. Really odd. Can't explain it.

They're being strip grazed, there will be an electric fence in front of them stopping them going any further. The idea is that you control the amount of forage they are eating and nothing gets wasted by being walked or poo'd on, the farmer will move the fence forward a few feet every day. This is also done with sheep but then it's called folding ? and is usually done on swedes, :)

Ahhhh I see. Thank you Ferreters. Mind you, there's little room for them to eat where they are, unless they look over their shoulder and plod back across the ploughed field.

Cowslip and Son

I saw  these two while I was cycling across Greenham Common on my way to Newbury. They were quite happy to pose while I snapped away. On my way back there was 2 people had turned up in a  4x4 and were feeding the cow with something from a sack, so I asked them about the cow and calf. The little chap on the left is 2 weeks old. He's had a difficult first 2 weeks of life. His owners didn't realise that Cowslip was in calf, but on a bitterly cold day 2 weeks ago they went to check up on her, and there he was. He doesn't have a name ("We don't give boys names"). Even though this was her first calf, and despite the difficult weather, Cowslip has been a perfect mother and knows exactly what to do. She looks very thin and bony, but is getting extra feed every day.

I've been taking lots of bovine photos recently. They always seem to come and have a nosey when you stop on the bike.
