As of yesterday I have enough strength back in my left hand to safely ride a road bike again.

Employer told that they can't unilaterally change terms and conditions

Before reacting please read this bit

"We have always accepted that changes are necessary but all we ever asked is that they were fair and protected those who have given loyal service."

Bloody civil servants and their gold-plated pensions...  >:(

See - there are some sensible High Court judges...

Any law student who has covered employment law would have been able to tell you the most likely outcome of that mess.

Having said that:  It is rather too obvious that redundancy and pension remuneration levels in the public sector will have to be addressed, and will have to reduce.   The country simply cannot afford the unbridled generosity of a generation that paid itself excessively leave work and live off the fat of the treasury.

OK up to the point where you wrote "paid itself excessively". In fact the majority are paid extremely modest salaries.

The problem lies, not in the pay, but in the blind trust in future growth to fund things, rather than making proper provision

OK, let me substitute "excessively" with "beyond the available means,"

I would agree that most are paid extremely modest salaries and pensions.  This doesn't make them affordable, unfortunately.

As with everything else in life, affordable depends on needs, perception, priorities etc.

This:

BBC News - Use of local food boosts hospital funds

A rather spiffing way of saving £6m from a hospital budget, I thought.

Excellent bit of news. There must be scope for a suitable brokerage site for connecting consumers and providers. It would be ideal for farmers, cafes, hospitals, schools etc.

They copied the idea from Norfolk, where it has been running for several years, albeit in a slightly different form.

For hospitals, it's part of the work being undertaken by the NHS Sustainable Development Unit, who are down the corridor from me

This shows the scene outside our house.

The main sewer has collapsed and is being fixed. A large hole has been dug and men keep climbing in and out of it. It's all very exciting and has implications for our future lentil consumption.

Oh no it doesn't.  I don't see an image, and even cutting & pasting the URL into another browser window doesn't help.
Actually, it is rocket science.

That's odd. It certainly shows an image on my computer - and it's the image I intended it to show.

Twitpic may not allow direct linking to the image itself, but only to the page that it's on.  You'll see it on your machine since it's in your browsers cache.

Wowbagger - your street scene reminds me of the last time I was in Ljubljana. There was a similar scene outside our hotel, except for a couple of minor details - there was no fencing, warning signs, or men wiv 'ats. There was just a hole in the road, exactly like that, and the road wasn't even closed - so the traffic was running as normal, and just avoided the hole.

Southend Council/Your Water Company clearly know a thing or two about Elfen Safety.
