Monitor question
« on: 09 April, 2020, 03:53:18 pm »
WFH I have a laptop docking station with the following monitor outputs:
VGA
HDMI
DisplayPort

I have 2 monitors (FYI these are ancient old square format, not anything fancy in super high res):
1 with VGA only
I with VGA and DVI-D (I'm currently using only this via VGA)

I have a VGA-VGA cable.

What's the best purchase to allow me to use the 2nd monitor in a 2 monitor set up?
HDMI to DVI?
DisplayPort to DVI?

Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Either will be fine

In my experience DisplayPort to DVI adapters are super finicky.

HDMI and DVI are (roughly) the same thing in a different shaped plug, so should be more reliable.

Your laptop may or may not support outputting to multiple displays at once.

I later found that the monitor also had a DisplayPort as well so I've ordered a DP to DP cable in the vague hope that would work best.
I use 2 monitors at work no problem, I just CBA bringing both of them home.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

My Macbook uses a mini-displayport to the DVI without issue – mostly because I couldn't find an HDMI cable the cable snake drawer. I'm sure I have at least six, but as is the nature of cables, you are doomed to find every cable that you don't want and never the one you do.

I was pleased to see in this recent ElecroBOOM video that he has those boxes just like the rest of us...
