From what I've seen, you get no brakes and a freewheel, so stopping is by "sneaker brake".

I'm marvelling at the positioning of "speedway" and "fun" in the same sentence.

Looks a lot of fun, except I don't fancy the falling-off bits:

Isn't there a member of this parish who was injured trying speedway?

I seem to recall that Anth (Blackpuddingonabike) of CityCycling fame broke his elbow playing this version of silly buggers. It does look like fun, though in the news article, the rider in third wheel (yellow helmet) looks to be en route for a inner perimeter induced off.

I used to have a Cycle Speedway bike at school in Stockport (circa 1975).
Forks straightened by putting them down a grid and heaving on the headstock and Westrick wheels.
I forget the gearing but it was bloody low and great for wheelies.
I never competed, I used to use it for school, they were just cool for about a year (and there was a Championship track near my house in the local park). The lack of brakes and a freewheel means I'm lucky to be here.
Cor Blimey! It's still there (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=heavily+stockport&hl=en&ll=53.403812,-2.145003&spn=0.000552,0.001711&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=17.969195,39.418945&t=h&z=20), Look at those tight apexes, pays to be first to the apex I bet.

It is indeed. I got some bike bits from a competitor when I was there a couple of years ago, he nearly persuaded me to join in.
