Well I'm setting off in about half an hour for Colne Engaine by car and will then make my way to Witham to meet Oaky and Wowbagger. Sorry you can't come, Del.

A shame! It will be a lonely vigil as I climb North Hill in the wee small hours...

I'm back! Had a cracking evening, with a rather lonely but pleasant ride from Colne Engaine to Witham where I met Wowbagger and Oaky and we returned by the same route to the pub. The pub did a VERY good Steak & Chips and we ended up having desserts too, whilst Wow and Oaky drank copious amounts of Swallowtail. I had a nice, warm car journey home - don't think the other two are quite as comfortable.

A first-rate ride.

As AH said, we met at Witham, rode to a good pub, ate steak, drank beer and then went home. It was a lovely night, very cold but once the sun had set, still. I thought aI heard a nightingale somewhere Greenstead Green but I wasn't sure. However, I had no doubt at all when one started to sing near Bicknacre, south of White Elm Road, and another, the bird I heard a couple of weeks ago, just outside the borough boundary.

I wonder if there are any pubs in Berkeley Square.

Cracking ride - as the others have said.

Humpty Dumpty brewery's Swallowtail, Mill Green brewery's Green Goose and a Crouch Best to cap it all off.

Almost warm enough for bare arms and mitts on the way there (I did it anyway, but my fingers got a wee bit cold in the last mile or so) and quite cold on the way home, but OK once we got moving.

I'd grabbed a pastie on my way through Liverpool street, so skipped the steak course, but had an excellent cheeseboard in the dessert round.

A spit over 30 miles for me, at a stately 10.3mph, arriving home a little after midnight.

One "hedge stop" on OD's favourite trespassing route, which appropriately enough was just over the hedge from a field of peas.

My Cat-eye packed up again because of the cold. The Garmin registered 57.8 miles, the Cat-eye 29.4.

I arrived home at about 3.15, was in bed before 4 but am up again because there is a gang of men with machines having dug up our road in order to fix the sewer. Not much sleep chez Wowbagger today.

I'm taking a few days off for a little tour*, so I won't be around this Weds. The following week I should be ok for AH/UJ's hosted ride.

*I've been meaning to do a rough - stuff tour up the Icknield/Peddar's Way to N. Norfolk for ages and have finally got round to putting knobblies on 'Marge', my old Dawes Acoma MTB [as used on FYBO camp] and have resuscitated a very old and knackered, but extra - wide set of mudguards. The promise of a few days warm weather prompted me, plus I need to get in quick before #1 son's GCSE's start next Friday!

I won't be around this Wednesday. James will have been sailing for a few days on our old boat (sold a couple of years ago to a nice chap who likes having James around as knowledgeable crew) so need to welcome him home (this could mean 'cycle to collect him and the car so he can have some beers and I can drive him home')

Tonight (Matthew) I shall be alighting from the train in Chelmsford at about 1810.  Then I shall cycle to Maldon along NCN Route 1 cos I've only ever done bits before and one of my esteemed Ranger colleagues has sorted out the signing.

Then I shall be cycling from Maldon to Witham along NCN Route 1/16.

Due to the extreme distances I will no doubt be seeking refreshment in The Cats and Blue Boar.

Feel free to join me.

Love un stuff to one and all  :-*

I would love to, but am stuck inside tonight (actually there's a slim chance I might be able to get out in time to rendezvous at the Cats... I'll check and report back)  :-\

I'm definitely trapped at home Wednesday though.  :'(

This Wednesday is theoretically my hosted ride, in the Colchester/Manningtree area. Is anyone able to come?

I'm free! Also, Deniece, [from your neck of the woods] may be persuaded to venture out if you are staying north of Colchester.

I haven't decided quite yet where we're going but north side of Colchester is highly likely as it avoids some of the annoying hills.

The option for folks is to get the train to Colchester and ride from there to the pubs, perhaps returning from Manningtree. Or to train to and from Manningtree. Those who are riding over could meet at my place (between Colchester and Manningtree) if that works better. I shall think a bit more about it in due course. I have my last Uni exam on Wednesday morning so will be happy to celebrate with an orange juice in a pub. I think James will come along too.

Are you coming by train, Oaky? If so, are you coming to Manningtree or Colchester. Manningtree is nicer, of course...
