What to do with used chains?
« on: 05 April, 2009, 05:56:51 pm »
Being an inveterate hoarder... and liking to find another use for everything
I find myself with half a dozen used bicycle chains.
Ideas?...

I make keyrings. The nephews love them. Got a nice halflink chain that's fit for the bin so might try making a bracelet out of it.

I've seen a few Damascus steel blades made from motorcycle chains, it might work with bike chain too.

The ideal answer - chuck them in the iron and steel bin at your local tip.

Less than ideal - landfill, which is where they came from in the first place, sort of.

Bit of angle iron and a drill and you have a chain whip. You can make one with as much leverage as you want. (in my case, lots)

But I should think you chaps already have one, or two.

Actually, peterc, bloody good point about the bchain whip - I was about to spring for a (cheap) one to do my first chain+cassette replacement - now I can reuse the old chain I take off.

Eco-friendly AND cheap ;-)

I fancy axle extensions on the Trike, (about 3 feet) and then the flails - should cut down close overtakes

I kept all my old 8 speed chains.  They got removed when the gears jumped.  They are now being
recycled as single speed chains

When they are worn out from use as a winter single speed chain they are utterly shagged and have to be binned

There's a guy at the local blacksmith's who makes the most amazing sculptures from used bicycle chains and cassette rings.

(But then I tried to commission him to make a specific piece, and was told that he would only make things when inspired, not when requested, because it just wasn't artistic. Ponce.  >:( )
