What were you doing during The Great 2012 02 Outage?
« on: 12 July, 2012, 09:01:45 am »
Eighteen hours so far. My GiffGaff coverage was zero all yesterday afternoon and evening, and is intermittent now.

These things happen I suppose, but when you're stuck in a hospital with no way for your lift home to contact you, and only uber-expensive payphones to contact them with it becomes less funny. At first I was worried the X-ray department had fried my phone, as it was working fine just before the x-ray, but I had No Network on leaving X-ray.

My O2 mobile is working just fine. Maybe only your part of the O2 network is having an outage.

It's a software problem. Some numbers are registering with the system while others are not. One person might not get the network while someone standing beside them will.

David's iPad SIM contract is on O2.
He seems to have emailed and Tweeted successfully from his iPad whilst en route to City Hall.

It's crap.   My service keeps flipping in and out.   I need my phone for a job today.   Might have to claim against O2 for lost income...

I've had over 16 hours with no signal, but it's finally come back in the last thirty minutes!

What is quite bizarre about this outage is that my phone (couldn't) see any other networks. normally I can scan for other networks and connect to one for emergency calls only.

At a guess, it looked an awful lot like the IMEI had been blocked. That would bar the phone from 'seeing' any networks.  It would also account for why I was sat next to someone who had full signal while my phone couldn't detect a network at all.

Like Ariadne, I turned my data connection off, which allows me to use text and calls. If I turn the data connection on, it wipes out the mobile network.

Default for my data and wireless connections is off but I have still been affected.

It seems that I now have a signal again - here's hoping I can go earn some moola!

In response to the original question-

Much the same as I did 25 or so years ago before mobile phones.

It is moments like this that expose the dangers of heavy reliance on fallible technology.

No issues with signal AFAIK. Of course I spent most of yesterday evening in a mobile phone black spot so I wouldn't have really noticed anyway.

My thoughts went something like
1- useless employers not paid bill again
2-local problem due to rain/flooding etc
3- this is serious
4- has anybody elses phone had a problem-obviously couldnt call so had to wait until I got home(we have 3x O2 accounts)
5 - so what??

Like it or not mobile phones are part of life and have changed the way many people work. I am not claiming they are essential but I bet most businesses would be a lot less efficient without them.
