What to do in Edinburgh when you only have 1 hour..
« on: 06 August, 2015, 09:33:44 pm »
Tomorrow I have a meeting in Edinburgh which if all runs to time will finish at about lunchtime..  My flight back is not till a litle later in the day to allow for my meeting to over run.
So at best I might have a free hour to spend looking in the tourist shops.

Unless you lot can think of anything better to do?  (Short notice I know, but so was the meeting confirmation)

Alas I wont have a bike with me..

Personally, I would stock up at the very delicious Coco Chocolate and then possibly have a pint if the sun was over the yard arm...

Go to the Malt Shovel for a pint of Deuchars and keep away from the Royal Mile

I can think of better pubs than the Malt Shovel, and better pints than Deuchars - but if you're offering, I wouldn't turn either of them down.

(Yes, have a pint is the obvious solution to a mere hour of freedom. But how well do you know Edinburgh? Take a camera and have a walk? Go to the National Gallery/RSA, or to the Gallery of Modern Art? Carefully avoid the street theatre that'll be infesting the place at the moment? Pick something from the Fringe with the sole criterion that its timing fits yours?)

Aye, there probably are, but it's the one I remember visiting by the station for a pint before I set off on a train to my mum's at some time in the past.

Not difficult to find something better than the Tennants watering holesof Stornoway ;)

Oh sure, it's certainly in the two or three or four I'd be thinking of if I wanted a pint before getting a train.

Climb the Scott Monument. Probably too busy in the festival.

Have a beer in the Cafe Royal.

Don't touch Grefrisrs Bobby's nose, but pass it on the way to the Greyfriars Kirkyard, where history lies buried, and then on to the Grassmarket, climbing back up across the Royal Mile and down the Mound.

Climb Arthur's seat.

Look at the weirdness of the Scottish Parliament.
It is simpler than it looks.

Yes, if only an hour. You'd need to run to do Arthur's seat in an hour!

You can do Calton Hill in normal shoes too, a suit just wouldn't be right on Arthur's Seat.

I had thought of seeing a show, for the pure madness of it..

My free hour is between 1pm and 2pm, so the pub / lunch suggestions are very useful.
Thanks for the other suggestions. :-)

The cafe beneath St. John's Church on Princes Street is very good, as is the Scottish National Gallery.

The National Gallery was the eventual winner, with a short circuit of the madness that is people trying to promote a fringe show.
Thanks for the suggestions.
