Anyone else trying for the 1mph target?
« on: 17 September, 2008, 07:06:52 pm »
A long time ago, someone mentioned a 1mph target for the year - but I can't find the thread, sorry.

So, if you ride at least 24 miles every day for 366 days, that's 8784 miles between 1st January and 31st December in 2008.

I'm a tiny bit ahead at the moment, but still have 2263 miles to go in the next 100 days.

Bleah! I sometimes wish I'd never started. This is hard.

It was Tim and it was 1kph:-

I've used this theory on motorists to prove that my bike is faster than their car.
I tell them my bike is faster than their car, then they tell me it isn't.
I then ask them their annual mileage.
I then divide it by hours and give them their average speed for the year. Then, I tell them my annual distance and divide it by hours and tell them my average speed. ;D

I can achieve 1 kph, just with my commute.  Any other cycling (FNRttC, shopping, etc) just adds to that.

1mph would be a bit harder, I'd have to do just under another 9 miles every day (on average) to get up to it.  One 63 mile cycle a week would do that, but I don't achieve that at the moment.  One 63 mile every month or so (a FNRttC) and some shorter distances in between, but probably not the required amount.

It's an interesting idea, maybe I'll try for this starting in January.
Actually, it is rocket science.

I may try for 1km/hr in the next 2 years (as prep for PBP 2011) and then possibly 1mph in the final lead up to PBP and SR in 2011.

I'll probably do 8000km this year (0.91m/hr) so 1km/hr isn't such a tough goal.

1 mph would be a superb training target for PBP year I think.  Watch this space.

I don't think I'll quite make 1km/hour this year, but close.  Maybe next year, assuming I keep up my riding in the winter and stay fit enough to do my whole commute both ways most of teh time.

I did it in 1993.
I exceeded it in 1994 & 1995.
Teethgrinder must have exceeded it for each of the last 15 years.

following that thread, I have been recording progress, and I am on target to make 1/2 mph.

Next year I might go for 3/4 mph

I exceeded it for last year. Did more miles that we did in our landrover (which gets driven to school and back every day+ a trip to Aberdeen).

Probably about 16 years now. The last 13 years, most were over 2mph.
At least 3 years of over 3mph. I don't keep an accurate record. That's like walking non stop 24/7/365 :o

Great idea, don't think I'll make the 1mph target this year though (although I might be close) - Would have to do over 2700 miles between now and the end of the year.

I'm 90 miles off 0.5mph for a year, now I'm really wondering about 1km/hr

I was 924 miles short of 1 mph last year. I'm on target to reach in excess of 1 kph this year, but without much margin for error.

I'm targetting PBP in 2011 so I expect I'll set myself a target of 1mph in the 12 months leading up to it and combine it with RRTY as prep for the big one.

After that I may give cycling a wide berth for a while.

I've achieved that this year already.

I think Mr T.Grinder managed 3mph last year.  :o

Nowhere near my target of 1kph this year. Next year I plan on making 1mph.

I'm way behind....  :'(
Tend to average 1.15 kph most years... On track for 1.2kph this year...

Although my commute is 35 miles a day, I do not actually do the journey to work 365 days a year, more like 200...

I've already reached 1mph.  I think I did it last year as well.  My commute is about 24 miles, and since I commute daily, I don't need to do too much more to maintain that.

I'm struggling, with the 1mph, but will probably make it if the weather is OK later in the year. A couple of audax rides soon take a big chunk out of the remainder. I was ill last weekend, and tired today... but every single day off is another 24 miles to catch up sometime.. I "need" to ride 48 miles between now and Sunday night just to maintain the target when I should really be spending the weekend in bed with Lemsips and brandy instead!

This is much too close to OCD for comfort.  :-[

And you'll soon overtake me on BikeJournal, in the process. Good luck with that, and I hope you're feeling better.

Just been reading about your trip this summer (on your web pages). Thanks... I enjoy being impressed!

I didn't even reach the start of the Daglingworth ride yesterday... trying to let bum recover before resuming normal OCD procedures towards the 1mph. (Sadly, not Ordre de Cols Durs but the other thing.)

Just come across this: never thought of it averaged this way! I should make the 1 KPH by year end (allah willing). More than last year, fair bit less than 2005 and '06.

STOP PRESS>>> XMAS EVE>>>

I've done it.  O:-)

My mileage for 2008 is 8785 - one more than the number of hours in this year - and I've still got a week of pootling around to do. My average speed for 2008 is 1 mph.  :D

At times I wished I'd never tried for the distance, but it was straightforward in the end. I commute 24 miles every day and with a big summer tour and an Audax every month it just seemed to happen.

Phew.

Hmm I passed the 1km/h earlier this year but I do not think that I would be able to pass the 1mph ever as that is around 2785 miles more than what I did this year.
