2003 Open Pro rims
« on: 20 March, 2017, 11:16:49 am »
My lovely 2003 Roberts had its wheels made by Harry Rowland with Open Pro rims and Veloce hubs.  They have performed superbly but I guess rim wear might be a bit near the limit - showing signs of concavity.  Do 2003 Open Pros have rim wear indicators?

It has always been a summer-only bike and I'd like another summer's use out of them and then give the whole machine an overhaul in the winter.

No wear indicators on Open Pro.  They can be quite concave before they are on the limit.  Best to measure one flange with calipers.  I think 0.7mm is supposed to be the safe limit,  though I've dismantled one that was still going at 0.5mm

Get an Iwanson gauge for measuring round the lip (about £5).

0.7 mm is where I've had failure, though I've also gone a bit thinner, at least in places, without.
Lower pressures & narrower tyres reduce the change of rim failure due to wear, but increase the chance due to potholes.
