Uffington PURPLE Horse
« on: 04 June, 2010, 08:10:16 pm »
Looks like I will have to ride my SE Oxford Loop 200 Perm tomorrow, so that I can have a look at the desecration imposed on this famous chalk landmark in the Vale of the White Horse.  Working on an update to the Anticlock routesheet, from which you have the best (head on) views.

It might have washed off by Sunday??

BBC online says it has been "re-chalked" so may not be anything to see

Apparantly, the purpling was done AFTER the re-chalking.

I think the purpling was done after a scheduled rechalk.
Since the purpling, I understand it's been further rechalked BICBW.

Must have missed you Kev. I spent 45 mins in the Q tea shop re-hydrating.

Needed decent binos (too heavy) to see any purple; perhaps the white paint man was up there at dawn.

Was there yesterday. Much evidence of recent chalking in view. Of course, we knew nothing of the purpling and just thought that the people of Uffington had recently given themselves up to the fairs and "scourging" of the figure  ::-)  mentioned on the nearby Ministry of Works sign.

I'd recommend the nearby cream tea farm too.

There's already a detailed discussion of this:

Vandalism of Uffington White Horse

But in terms of the Audax special interest ...

it is nice that there is a ride where you actually get a good view of the thing. Other rides go nearby (and mine go about as close as possible), but due to it's flattish canvas on a summit, it's a much trickier horse to see from the road than the others in the area. Of course the others are all rather boring expressions of the equine form compared to this one :P

Steve, I must have a go at this ride - feel free to email me as part of your extensive marketing activities :)
