i can see one rider is back - in just over 3.5 days. iirc first rider was back 11hrs earlier two years ago, so i assume the conditions were less favourable this time (too hot?).

Now showing 4 riders back. 3.5 days is amazing considering the heat, and all the climbing in this event. Wonder how much sleep/ meal time off the bike the leading riders took? if anyone finds their ride reports later, I would be interested to read.

The other controls are not updating properly yet , to show later arrivals...?

There does seem to be a problem - Castelnouvo shows Pete T in at 05.30 but not John - I know they arrived together ???

Latest from John an hour ago "Ridden with Pete T all day. Eroica route into Siena, where ee spent too long. Now heading for San G & ice cream . #1001miglia"

He's clearly finally gone native. The route may have been heroic, but there's no excuse for an italian accent ...

Just sayin'. Poor chap couldn't find the control, in the dark & pouring rain. Still looked immaculate, though.

I see Veloboy and Dan Moores have finished now, congrats to them. Just over 4 days.
Any news of other UK riders still out on the road?
Will the extra 12 hours be enough?ie 147 hours allowed, 6 days 3 hours. I believe the organisers are quite generous to participants near the cut-off times.

Not sure about the other UK riders but it sounds touch and go with John.  One hour ago:

#1001miglia now in Aulla. Next section looks gruesome - 1913 m in 74 km in the heat of the day. Make or break.

Hope you can send him an encouraging reply. He must only have about 340 k to go??

ParkySouthLondon and Mike Pain (Cardiff Byways) retired at half distance. Two day in that heat just did us in. Lost appetite and feeling a bit light headed. 40'C and did not know how much to drink. Gave up energy powder because I thought it was suppressing my appitite. Using a mineral tablet now and again but breathing hot air made your mouth dry in minutes. I had 2 large bottles and a 1.5 litre bottle in my back pocket. I could almost use this to make tea after a while so it wasn't much good to cool me with when poured over my head.  Not being able to eat was the big problem.
Then I broke the lead that charged my Garmin. I tried to follow the route sheet at night with head torch but it was difficult. It was then I decided to say time to pack.
Speaking to some of the finishers this morning they were sleeping for 1.5 hrs max a day.

And the theory of stopping during the mid day heat doesnt really work because at least
When you were riding you had a slight cooling breeze. When you stopped riding you really did feel HOT

Thanks for the update, parky. Sounds gruelling in the extreme. With the wet and cold start of summer we had in Britain, there was no time to acclimatise for those hot conditions. Riding MM in 2010, we were lucky and it was not too hot most of the time.

Well I could but that sort of thing's for friends, acquaintances, strangers and, at a push, sisters to do, but certainly not brothers.

He's just tweeted asking me for the telephone number for a hotel in Milan.  Not sure if that's a good thing or not, but I've replied.

Sounds like a good thing, as the finish is in a suburb of Milan (Nerviano)?...

With the extra 12 hours,(assuming thats still applied at the end) , I think riders still out on the road have to finish by around half midnight local time, (depending on their exact start times, of course). so far , about 2/3rds of the starters have finished, but a lot have packed...

Some rider!

I've never set off for the start of an Audax 8 weeks before it starts.

Is he riding back do we know?

Naturally.  ::-) He completed the Herentals 1200km audax and attempted the Massif Centrale Le Douze Cents 1200 on the way too. I don't think he's planning anymore after the Mille Miglia, but one never knows :P

About 30 minutes ago he tweeted:

Castellania. As hot as I've been all summer. Never mind the mauseleum, I came here for the fontana .

Just arrived back at Gatwick. This was the hardest ride to date for me (3rd time Miglia1001)!!
The heat was so intense - the wind from the fields even hotter and by mid-afternoon, the Tarmac radiated heat!
3 days and 4 nights on the road with 3 sleep breaks for an hour-ish each.
Still, the scenery was stunning and the mountain descents fantastic!
I think three times is enough for me :-)

Reckon he'll be back 2016, even if he sits out 2014.. ;)
Following this thread made me want to ride it again.

Was it easy to find enough water to drink, and didnt the suntan lotion run out??
